    I don't buy it. This guy was never getting close to the poor house, even after that kind of loss. Must be more to the story. Something's fishy.

    I put money into VW, and am happy to see that it is up over the last six month. Could even have sold some before Christmas for a great profit on the little peak it had. As long as Porsche is still acquiring it, it's a great hedge to buy and hold it while the rest of the market turns to jelly. This poor fellow didn't see how to use it.

    I didn't realize billionaires knew where to find trains.

    Still, it's sad, and certainly not the last case like this that we'll be hearing about in the next 6-12 months. Rich people hate going broke.

    ... do these quitters think that they will be part of history by offing themselves? Maybe that's part of the self-absorbed pathology.

    I can sorta understand where all these rich dead guys are coming from. To become a squijillionaire, you gotta REALLY love money, the pursuit of it. It's gotta be your whole life, right? It's not about downgrading to a smaller house, like a friend of mine said. It's about losing a part of your SOUL. None of us can really imagine loving money as much as this guy did. But what if the love of your life, or your child, or something else that means a lot to you suddenly disappeared? You might get a little suicidey, right? I think the whole "it's just money!" excuse is easy for us to say. This guy was more like "it's ALLLL money!"

    @CodePink:

    I once spoke to an incredibly wealthy man. He told me that he got his entire portfolio's value sent to his office twice a day by an armada of financial advisors, summarized and collated by a secretary whose job it was to generate his net worth in USD for him at the open and close of the US stock market. He must have had some sort of model for infrequently priced or illiquid assets.

    I'm positive this wasn't because there was a purchase to make, or because there were debts to pay, or because there was some crucial threshold approaching. He just wanted to know how many points he'd racked up in God's game.

    @ADismalScience: I suppose that's one way to measure your "success" in life, or points as you put it.

    The mind is an interesting place.

    @FracturedAcetabulum: This conversation brings to mind the Mr. Show sketch about how "more money equals better than." It was brutal and funny and no one here ever quotes Mr. Show (except fiveinchtaint, obliquely, through the username), so maybe I'm alone in liking it.

    @CodePink: You make a good point. I am sure that most people are feeling the effects of the economy in some way or other, and the vast majority of the population is less well off than Mr. Merckle (that might be my biggest understatement of the day...), but you only hear about the richest killing themselves over the losses. I think most people are simply trying to survive (without beating up a hobo for his shoes, if possible).

    Of course, could be that anyone else commiting financial-ruin related suicide is not considered newsworthy.

    @ADismalScience: I had to read this a couple of times because I don't know much about all that stuff, but yeah--seriously. Having that much money becomes your job. And other people's jobs! Keep track of my money! It's crazytown.
