@Mama Penguino: Kansas is wonderful, especially the tallgrass prairie preserves. Everything you could ever want, great big blue skies, wildflowers, tornadoes, are right there already and no reason ever to leave. New York, though, is going through one of its adolescent phases when the old is dead and the new is not quite yet born, and in this interregnum, there arises a great diversity of morbid symptoms. To steal some more from Gramsci, in the meanwhile the cultural hegemony of New York has been temporarily suspended, so we might as well all move back to Wichita and raise ponies or something useful.

@krismry: Aw, that's beautiful. In fact, I was just at the Konza Prairie last weekend. Despite being born and raised in Kansas -- with a few brief moves to the west coast, England, and the Deep South -- the tallgrass prairie never, ever ceases to leave me breathless with possibilities.

interesting aside related to this topic - today i was googling about the motherfucker partie scene of the past. gawker had a picture of a sexy writer named Jessica Pilot who apparently worked for penguin at the time. so i got to googling her and she is a freelance writer now and apparently had a stint with Radar. Then I saw this:

I was wondering if gawker even knew about this, or if they're buddies with her. Either way, it's cringe-inducing.

This piece should scream "don't hate the player hate the game" in my ear. Strangely, it does not, this lot can't ever get enough in the way of a good old fashioned lampooning. Early and often. That being said..

Assembled here is a cast of characters that only our culture and our sort of, time spirit, could possibly produce.. Singularly.

America. What a country.

But admit it, we love them. We adore them. All of them. And I for one am not afraid to admit it. They do so much for us, on so many different levels.

This admission was hatched because I made a public declaration of love for the Lady gaga song "poker face", and the flood gates have opened. Inhibitions about what brings me joy, as well as the pretense of what I pretend to enjoy, are falling away.

Kind of like what I imagine a newly outed gay man feels... It's doesn't suck, this feeling.

Inside edition is officially no longer a guilty pleasure, by the way.

Okay, a question about the title and lead-in, which reads:

"MEET THE NEW WAVE OF GREAT GATSBYS -- WEB SCRIBES WHO CHRONICLE THE RICH AND ALMOST FAMOUS."

Now, not to split hairs here, but wouldn't the people who were rich and "almost" famous be equal to the Gatsbys, which would make the people covering them be equivalent to other characters, say, for example, "Owl-eyes" or Ewing Klipspringer? I would say, however, that Mary Rambin would definitely correspond to Daisy Buchanan. That's just me though.

I hate this city.

I summoned Brooke Astor on the Ouija board tonight, and she agrees with you.

"Torch this fucking place please don't make a mockery oh god here come the demons again" was the exact message. She also said something about Christ, Islam, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, but it's all a little too disturbing to repeat here.
