According to the right, CNN is the liberal's propaganda of choice. (O'Reilly often cites CNN as "far left".) So I think a better comparison is CNN network pitted against Fox. I only have access to the international editions of both networks, but Fox International has NO advertising. Nothing. CNN international has lots of advertising. Money talks. So at least for the majority of the world's cable news watchers, Fox News isn't making money though advertising and CNN internaitonal is.
Also: I would set aside the commentariat. Liberals and conservatives consume news differently. I find most social conservatives seek out commentary that affirms their already established world views. They don't watch "news"; they listen to people interpret the news in a way that is amendable to their already established world views.
Liberals I think tend to consume media that presents news, breaking information about things that are happening rather than interpretation of things that have happened, and they tend to read more.
O'Reilly and Limbaugh are kings because they're good at what they do (credit where credit is due) but not because America is filled with Angry White Americans. Angry White Americans are the predominant demographic for talk radio and cable news commentary. I am very liberal and loathe listening to liberals tell me how to think. Conservatives tend to gravitate toward those that are good at affirming and massaging their views.
Ergo, liberal talk radio and the liberal commentariat will never-ever best those that are really good at being bloviators.
@gawkimo: As a conservative, I have to disagree with your glittering generalities on how we consume news.
I would LOVE to find a place that gives me news. CNN doesn't, Fox doesn't, NPR doesn't, nor do any newspapers. I find all 'news' clothed in commentary and opinion. I think the various news outlets makes it very difficult to uncover the news and formulate your own opinion. I end up watching, reading and listening to a variety of news sources in order to figure out what is going on.
The one thing you can say about Rush and Hannity is that they do not hide the fact that they are bloviators. CNN, not so much. Although I do enjoying watching the silver haired fox, no matter what comes out of his mouth.
@momof3wildkids: I can't help you if you think there's no news out there. At the very least one must recognized the existence of news somewhere before they can have a discussion about this issue. Perhaps this is what I'm talking about. Andersen Cooper aside (he's a celebrity news presenter) I find plenty of news reports in TV and print, even on Fox News. Right now Fox is talking about the poor, oppressed Christan teachers at Alameda College; CNN right now is covering the ANC elections. This is a subjective analysis, but I'm not very worried about Christianity being wiped out in America (something Fox is very concerned about), but I am interested in the ANC elections.
Quick, if you could choose which person you'd want giving you news about the war in Iraq, would it be:
Karl Penhaul of CNN talking about today's suicide bombing abnd the implications of American redeployment form Iraq; or
Gen. Oliver North of Fox talking abotu how fucking awesome the Nazy SEALs are. (They are awesome, but still.)
This is what I find to be the general Fox pattern: hubris and patriotism as a media product. It's not very useful to anyone who isn't already inside that bubble.
@Nkosi B.: I'll have to take your word for it! What is it Rush says when he cuts someone off? I haven't heard his show for ~15 years so I'll just assume it's something like "adios! Please enjoy the rest of Facebook. Now where are my pills??"
I want Ana Marie Cox's job. Apparently all she does is drink and go to parties and occasionally poop out a paragraph or two of incomprehensible dreck for her editors. Nice work if you can get it and she doesn't have nearly the overhead in hideous pink clothes and Pilates classes that Julia Allison does.
Am laughing very hard because I didn't realize Air America still existed. After the 20th, are they just going to broadcast applause? That might make a nice white noise machine.
Does Gore still have that cable channel with kids videotaping solar panels and shit, too?
Well done, AMC. And look, not a single snide remark about anal sex. What does Air America pay these days? I'd be running to the bank to cash that paycheck.

That's my theory and I'm sticking with it :)
