Seems like they saw the Valleywag site, heard someone call Owen a Scalywag, and then in searching for a name split Valleywag into Scalywag (shouldn't it be Scalawag) and Vagabond.
The first and most obvious problem beyond meetooing Gawker to death is that they're clutching at diction just out reach.
