    I actually felt bad for her until she got to all the things she'd miss. She worked hard her life, had breaks good and bad, and made something of herself. Cool. Life was good to her, and there's no reason she shouldn't enjoy herself.


    Then, through no fault of her own, she's lost everything. I get that. I feel for that. The sense of injustice and outrage must be overwhelming.


    But...listen, chicky, you've got your health, you've got whatever talents have gotten you this far in life. If the worst thing you have to face is is not using expensive French milled soap and not touring Laos again and having to ride the shame train, shut the fuck up. Stop whining, count your remaining blessings, and get back to work. Because that whining self-pity? That'll do you in faster than anything, and there are a lot of people a lot worse off.

    Penney is not affected by the recession. Penney is affected by giving her money to a mad swindler who promised higher-than-market returns. My sympathies here are with poor Yolanda.

    @Sproing: Timing is everything. And it was kinda lose/lose for this (now) poor woman. If she'd gone to a proper investment advisor instead of one of her rich friends, she would have had to estabish her tolerance for risk against expected return and/or long-term income. "Maybe" she would have been put into conservative dividend-paying blue chips and GICs; maybe not. Today, though, she'd more likely be feeling a bit of market crash pain, but wouldn't necessarily be totally wiped out. I feel bad for her because she worked and saved over many years to establish herself; but greed (I want to be like my rich friends) and ignorance (I'll dump all my savings in something I don't understand) are never good platforms for making an investment decision.

    @The Muggsy Bogues Redux Experiment: Canarsie is St. Barts compared to hanging out on the J line between, say, Myrtle-Broadway and Parsons-Archer. Not to mention that when the J finally escapes total filth at the edge of Jamaica, the last couple of stations are just creepy, if relatively clean.
