His punishment should have been this guy, though, following him around for the rest of his days... (coincidentally, a lot of soccer money is laundered through Antigua)
In prisons there is collusion between the guards, administrative staff and the violent -- though well organized -- gangs. The gangs gain special privileges for taking care of disciplinary problems with the other prisoners. Prison rape, beatdowns and slashings are only some of the methods used.
There was an interview printed in Harpers, now hosted here, with a Riker's Island prison guard. It's really a fucked-up prison system we have in this country. Nobody ought to be subjected to it.
Anyway, it's edifying to learn what the difference between a "telephone cut" and a "Buck Fifty" is (clue: one requires less stitches).
This is seriously fucked up and wrong. Whatever you think of the guy, and I don't think much of him, he is awaiting trial, not yet convicted of a crime.
@son of spam: Even if he was convicted of a crime, I still think it is ridiculous when people joke about or sincerely hope that a prisoner will get beaten, raped, or even killed in prison. I don't care how heinous the crime was that the prisoner committed, that simply shouldn't happen and certainly shouldn't be wished on anybody.
The idea that prisoners "deserve what they get" is the same kind of inhumane thinking that creates those kinds of prisoners in the first place.
Absolutely right. I can't stand this guy, but he is entitled to the presumption of innocence. Everyone should be protected from violence, but the notion that someone awaiting trial can be abused like that is scary.
Nothing will change most Americans' belief that whatever a prisoner gets in prison, they somehow "deserve" it, as most Americans define "justice" as "whatever makes me feel better about a crime."
@Dickdogfood: I have always thought they should add the words "and anal rape" to the end of each sentencing and sentencing standard. If you put that in the penal code, people will think twice about whether its just. Let's put it in the open and see just how barbaric our culture is.
@AliHajiSheik: It's said that rape in prison is an inevitablilty. This is not true. Proof of this can be found in the widely differing rape reports at different prisons by several studies. There are some prisons in which there are absolutely no reports of rape from prisoners, and there are some in which there are hundreds.
It's a relatively simple thing for the bureaucrats to take care of. They should go to each prison, interview the prisoners and ask each and every one whether s/he were sexually abused. In those prisons in which there are more than five incidents, they should fire the warden. That will take care of things pretty quickly.
I'm friending you by the way. Too many people on Gawker treat prison rape as a joke, or think of it as an acceptable punishment. Most of them, I might add, in a brilliant feat of reason, quickly turn around and call for Roman Polanski to be executed.
@AliHajiSheik: As soon as I come back to the states, I plan on doing some work for prisoner advocacy. I'm tired of this shit. Nobody in the US seems to care at all, and the inhumane view is the pervasive view (which Dickdogfood succinctly states).
I'm sure if someone on the outside makes calls on their behalf to newspapers and is enough of a (polite) pest at Congressional offices, one prisoner at a time has a remote chance at getting his/her grievances redressed.
"Ovaka Island Eastern Point (Almost Island) $58,500 USD
This "Almost Island" (3.5 ac. Approx) is as near as you can get to having your island without the million dollar outlay. The land mass is situated on an island, on a point with a narrow portion where the land mass joins the main part of the island.... The island has a small village of friendly natives who are an economical source of labor when needed."
Honestly, I just read the VF piece on this guy and I am so sad I did not start a shell Caribbean bank a few years ago...it was so EASY and I could be in Tonga right now with a mai tai.
You know Tonga is in the Pacific not the Caribbean, right? Polynesia, I think. Of course, the only reason I know this is because I was a fan of The Tongan Kid.
Anyone else read the New Yorker profile of this douchebag?
Apparently a year or two earlier the magazine had sent a reporter to follow him around for a legit profile about an interesting billionaire who funds cricket and runs the island of Antiqua like his personal fiefdom. Then they apparently later realized this guy is Mini-Madoff and turned it into a hit piece, which Sanford made incredibly easy by openly admitting to being a raging asshole.
