A lot of this seems to be about age. Please don't underestimate how bad/repressed it was during the Reagan years, people who didn't actually live through them! It was bad. That being said,
IT IS SO GREAT TO HAVE A SMART PERSON IN THE WHITE HOUSE AGAIN!!!
I'm a fervent Obama supporter, but I voted for Bill Clinton twice back in the 90s and and I like him. I had lot of respect for his presidency. And I like Hillary fine before this latest election cycle - and now that it's over, although I like her less, and still respect her, and don't dislike her.
But this shit-storm is just downright depressing.
I'm sorry, but it needs to be said: Some of the Hillary Clinton supporters on this thread are just way way too bitter. The way that bitterness has dripped through this thread like a corrosive acid is almost a little frightening. Your own party's candidate just won in a landslide, and the hostile ranting against Obama supporters on this day is just ... well, stunning, and ... ugly and ... sad.
I understand you're disappointed that your candidate lost. But that happened five or six months ago, at least. The bitterness is just over the top. It's time to let it go and stop freaking out about harmless shit like this post and just fucking relax and HEAL a little, OK?
And for Christ sake, Gawker writers should be allowed to say snarky stuff about politicians without getting roasted alive. This is GAWKER people. Not Politico. Not Huffington Post. Let Gawker be GAWKER. Please.
@MisterHippity: Hillary ran a shitty campaign, plain and simple. Bill Clinton was always in the way, seemed to have a shitty mood that bordered on sabotage. The majority of the story is over for me, she campaigned for Obama, so did Bill, Obama won the election. It's good enough for me.
A half million Iraqis killed by the privations of the Clinton sanctions regime, as well as the world-dismaying 1998 bombings conveniently timed to the most salacious Monica Lewinsky revelations, probably won't mind.
I don't think the Clinton Machine is over at all. In fact I think Obama unconsciously captured it more than Kerry or Gore did and that helped with the victory. That's probably why this win reminds me of 1992's win, especially electorally.
I say give the lady a spot on the Supreme Court. She'd be the new O'Connor. Then export Bill to some diplomatic post that will keep him abroad. Everyone wins.
Jebus, what a shitstorm. This reminds me of that "Germany hates us" thread a few days ago. Everybody needs to chill out and remember we just blew up the fucking Deathstar, for Christ's sake. We won. Let's be happy. Painkillers, anyone?
@apocalypse-nowish: Err. No. That's not how I remember it. As I recall it was Der Spiegel who did the pissing everyone off bit. I made a few admittedly not very funny remarks but some people took the shit waaaaay too seriously and got all ad hominem and shit. So no. I respectfully disagree with your version of the event.
@bjonston: Lemon squares? Would anyone care for a lemon square?
This persistent weird hatred between the Hills and Obama people is very confusing to me. Same party. Guy just won in the biggest landslide since, who, Jimmy Carter? Or Lyndon Johnson?
Can't we all just eat lemon squares and ride unicorns?
@Trixie from Toronto: No, I did not. And yes, I'd like to ride a unicorn. Not a big fan of lemon squares, tough. Unless they're laced with painkillers. In which case, I'll take 12, please. Thank you.
@Trixie from Toronto: You're so Canadian. (Also, this is exactly what I was just thinking. I can't imagine NDP voters talking to each other this way, you know?)
@valet_of_the_dolls: No. You put it behind you, and celebrate the win. I don't get it. Anything anti-Hillary gets immediately characterized as pro-Obama, which I don't get, and anything anti-Obama is immediately characterized as pro-Hillary. Weird. What if you liked or disliked them equally, and you're just making an observation?
A: Obama might not have won so handily if the economy hadn't imploded at the last minute, and B: he is actually to the right of Hillary on both health care and energy, and an unknown quantity on most other issues. What crime the Clinton's committed against all the little kids that are so smug about Obama I'll never know, but the hating sounds a lot like what you get from delusional Republicans who can, like some sort of absurd Kevin Bacon game, blame every current problem from the economy to terrorism on Bill Clinton.
@h8tr_718: Shhhhh...facts and shit ruin it! And the crime they committed against the kids is that she had the balls to run and mostly (for the white kids anyway) is that they grew up in Republican households and swallowed all that shit during the 90s. It's inherited Clinton Derangement.
@SinisterRouge: Yeah. I don't want to hear anymore glowing comparisons of Obama to Reagan. Obama is great. Reagan sucked. You hear that, kids? REAGAN SUCKED.
It will not surprise many of you to learn that I have gleaned Pareene's opinion about pancakes from this post, as well as which wireless telephone provider he prefers.
He is wrong on all counts, of course. I am carefully formulating my counterarguments now.
not a big fan of the Clintons either. but this really is a bit myopic. you celebrate calculating politico Emmanuel in one post, dismiss the Clintons in another, while meanwhile seemingly extolling the purported Obama notion of looking to Reagan as a presidential model? because he left such a fecund, noncorrosive legacy. is this what they call irrational exuberance? if so, understood!
I mean OK, agreed, the Clinton machine is finished, except Rahm's style may keep Bill's legacy of triangulation going for a bit longer.
Clinton did the best he could with the mess the Republicans left for him. AAs didn't necessarily thrive, but that was our most prosperous time in history. People's lives actually improved in practical ways during his administration.
And he continues to raise boatloads of money for Africans and victims of natrual disasters.
Wow. Now I feel like a mammie just for saying Bill Clinton was a decent president.
Another thing that kills me is that young whites seem to hate the Clintons much more than you hate G. W. Bush, Cheney, Rove et al. Will someone please explain that to me?
Or maybe Clinton is a total douche.
Whatever, I'm still poor, black and old and you unconsciously racist hipsters still ain't gonna offer me no cushy job on the Interwebs.
No matter. Now that President Obama has arrived, it's all rainbows and unicorns and puppies from here on out.
@AddisonPers?phon: Ha. You mean that these rich and privileged hipsters will continue to live in their ivory towers and pretend they care about the poor and colored plebes because they buy a red tshirt from the Gap? Because they will. The only time my life got better was during the Clinton years. I will never forget it.
and you know priorities are fucked up when they hate on Bill over hating on that scumbag Bush.
