"Gourmet made the critical decision in its infancy at the outbreak of WWII not to scale back its recipes in acknowledgement of wartime rationing, but to continue to blithely push a menu of French-inspired excess."
Of course, since Gourmet wasn't founded until the war had already entered its third year, one might more accurately describe its infancy as the "mid-point" of WWII, rather than the "outbreak." C'mon, people. They do teach you in school that the war started before Ben Affleck did his thing in Hawaii, right?
This news has really bummed me out. I've always loved flipping through Gourmet, even though it's not the magazine I usually turn to for recipes. I just renewed my sub for 2 years, so I wonder what they will replace it with as I also get BA.
I know some nice people who've worked at Gourmet. So maybe that's why it's among the first to go -- it didn't fit in with Conde Nast's corporate culture.

@Richard Rushfield: Thank you. I can continue to be snooty and French sans accents now.
