Stores named 'n things and 'n stuff shouldn't be in business anyway. If you can't decide what you're inviting people to come in and buy, you richly deserve bankruptcy. Level it and turn it into a parking lot.
However, I must say that if there were a store called "Things 'n Stuff" or "Stuff 'n Things" I would probably go check it out. I wouldn't buy anything, though. Unless they sold really useful stuff or pretty things.
If things are so dismal why are the stores so freaking crowded? I mean, I wish some of these big chain stores in Manhattan go out of business and return the Big Apple to the unique place it once was but I still see everyone shopping everywhere. I would think that I could have some elbow room if things were really that bad.
Funny how for forever now every year the news says the same thing: retailers are worried it'll be a dismal season for them. And now suddenly we're being told we were spending like drunken sailors all those years?
I have never met anyone who's spending is out of control for patriotic reasons. Quite the opposite, most of the gluttons I know are quite oblivious to what might be good or bad for the country.
One could hope that a few years of hard times might change that, but I'm not optimistic. We have become a world of (mostly) solipsists. You can't reason with such people, and they are unlikely to learn from their mistakes.
I'm engaged to a Bankruptcy lawyer. I know of about 7 huge retailers that are about to run out of money. The shit is bad out there, real bad. None of these stores can pay any of their vendors. I'm not allowed to tell anyone the names of the companies but I will tell you who will be having really good sales soon (cough cough).
@kitkatsplash: Does your bankruptcy fiance know that sharing confidential information with you is an ethical violation? Even just the NAME of the companies. If they are publicly traded I hope you both know what kind of trouble you both (but esp your fiance) could be in.
@AllsWell: Also, he only tells me the names if the info has been released on "record" (i.e. court documents, media sources). Thus, it's a legal communication. We are very discrete.
@kitkatsplash: And you're a total and complete 'tard for thinking that someone of his stature would do such a thing and that if he was doing something ILLEGAL that I would post it on a public forum. What the fuck is wrong with you people? Get that stick out of your ass.
@PandoraSpocks: Thanks Pandora. I could tell you but I won't. That was my point. And my comment above about supplies/vendors being more of an issue than the stores themselves is common knowledge. It's all over the papers. My fiance's big case right now (PUBLIC RECORD-IN ALL NEWSPAPERS) is an supplier for all the major autocompanies. The suppliers are not getting paid.
@HK_Guy: But HK, my fiance and I are hiding under the tables. Ever since I read Allswell's comment, we've feared that an arrest for insider trading and many other "high crimes" is coming our way.
Having watched Bad Santa again last night, I found in this viewing a (damned funny) critique of consumerism that comports very nicely with the excellent last sentence of the post.
@Monsignor Xtravagante D'ouchestache: Hah! My only problem is I need another closet. Got some motorcycle boots, c.f.m.p.s, tennis shoes, penny loafers, peep-toe heels -- you know, the usual.
We checked out MAcy's today in DC and there were not any major sales. There is a flipping recession people, everything in stock should be like 75% off. Retailers have a choice this year-loose money or break even.
@Monsignor Xtravagante D'ouchestache: Macys is doing okay. They're more worried about their vendors going bakrupt, running out of money, then they are about themselves. Bestbuy is doing worse but thinks it will make it through because most of the other major electronic dealers already have two feet in quick sand.
@QueenAlice: I think you're on to something. Maybe if Circuit City had offered free shots with electronics purchases they wouldn't be as bankrupt . . . Or maybe they would be more bankrupt? Who cares! Free shots for everyone!
