As someone lured into reading about VS Naipaul via the Paul Theroux memoir, I find this little tidbit amusing. Of course Naipaul will go with whomever pays him more money which is common even among those who are not Nobel Laureates, too. But since Naipaul is particularly fixated on getting and keeping as much as he can this cannot be a surprise to anyone. Even his authorized biographer notes that he's a bit of a miser.

The sad thing is that he really did his best work back when he was young and impecunious and what the publishers are fighting over now has been characterized by even Naipaul's "friends" as incomprehensible dreck.

I'm looking forward to all the scandal and fooferah that will surround publication of Richard's tell-all book about Gawker Media.
