A few years ago in California, a large teaching hospital sends out its transcription of medical record to a contractor who subcontracts it to another (skims off $), who then sent to another (skims off more $) and finally it ends up in Pakistan to a transcriptionist there. The last subcontractor didn't pay. The Pakistani notified the University of California, _______ _______ and says "I didn't get paid" and if someone doesn't pay me I'm going to post everyone's medical history, names, whatnot on the internet....

Long story short, she got paid. Everyone involved was dispatched.

50% of all medical record leaves U.S. shores and then comes back completed.

Your medical records are out there, people. Think about it. Here, we have federal laws. Outside the U.S., no law applies...

Please, my paper medical records are 1,000 times more vulnerable to being stolen than any digital ones.

Gimme my DMR now. I am so sick of filling out the same information on those fucking clipboards and then any records I need are always "in storage."

I've heard Chopra speak and was really, really impressed, he seemed really genuinely engaged and I thought he had great ideas, I hope he does a lot of awesome things in his new job. It doesn't seem like it was for lack of effort that they got hacked. Hell, it could have been someone out to smear him. Anyway, hopefully it's a lesson learned and he will put an even bigger focus than he already had on security and policy in general about digital information. Anyway, give him a chance, I think you'll like him.

Obama can't find a good geek for the same reason the IRS cannot find anyone to fix their hopelessly outdated software: nobody qualified to do the job wants anything to do with it. Working for the government has all the appeal of a root canal, particularly if you have actual marketable skills.
