@Seeräuber Jenny: When Richard Roeper was trying out guest reviewers (both critics and celebrities) after Ebert got sick, he included several women. As I recall, the most engaging were Aisha Tyler, who probably has better things to do, and EW's Lisa Schwarzbaum, who was hired by a different review show.
In the end, the only critics he kept bringing back were, um, Michael Phillips and A.O. Scott.
@icestorm: He and Ebert were mad about the dumbing-down of the show. Supposedly they're working on their own version, which will bring back the thumbs-up, thumbs-down ratings system because Ebert has that trademarked.
@FrozenHaddock: On a warm summers evenin on a train bound for nowhere,
I met up with the gambler; we were both too tired to sleep.
So we took turns a starin out the window at the darkness
til boredom overtook us, and he began to speak.
@eorbital: The movie certainly has some arresting moments earlier on, but once the feud between Will Smith and the "Zombie General" begins, the movie just goes completely downhill. The movie could have been quite good if it didn't follow the cynical Hollywood truism that we must have a recognizable central villain, and that he must yowl at the audience in an extreme close-up so we know he's the bad guy to focus our attention on. And god, the ending was just ... horrid. Why am I supposed to be touched by an ending which lionizes the martyrdom of a fictional figure? That move only works in biopics and documentaries.
Wait, did "I Am Legend" really happen?
They couldn't have made one of the replacements a woman?
I never watched this show, but Mankiewicz is fine on TCM, nothing special, but perfectly pleasant. I remember when TCM supposedly had a major search for a host for the weekend program and came up with someone who clearly was an insider. When I saw that the other show had been staffed with two insiders, I threw up my hands.
@1.1.1.:
True Ben M. is okay on TCM. He at least knows what he speaketh of.
Having seen a pirated version of "I am Legend", and not ever seen Ben Lyons, I can only ask is he retarded or does he just enjoy having a studio's hand up his ass?
Mankiewicz still has his day job at TCM, he will be fine. I just hope that Ben Lyons has to go on unemployment and eventually realize that he has no place on either side of the entertainment industry fence, and get a job as a faux barrista somewhere. He just sucks that much.
I'm happy about Lyons, but sad about Mankiewicz. I liked him. Plus, the poor man managed to sit across from that useless waste of skin for months without once punching him in the face, and this is the thanks he gets?
@MissNormaDesmond: I agree. Wouldn't it have made more sense just to bring Robert Osborne on? Disney could do worse than mimicking TCM's stellar roster.
Wasn't Michael Phillips supposed to join Richard Roeper in some new Ebert-supported review show? Now we'll never see "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" again.
@Pope John Peeps II: He is the guy who ran Deadspin, but Will's life goal is to be the next Roger Ebert. He's an incredibly knowledgeable film historian and writes reviews frequently on his Tumblr. [leitch.tumblr.com]

Having said that, bring on the film snobs. A last hurrah against the idiocracy.

Is it naive fantasy to hope someone executivey got fired?
