Shoot, I think the SF Chron has a great business plan! Fabulous. They set records the last six months for over a quarter drop in circulation, but they raised the price of the paper 33% on the street, so they claim to be swimming in cash. Eventually there will be one old rich diehard on Nob Hill paying $25K per diem for one each and the only autographed copy of the paper that was the Chronicle. #arguments
Michael Wolff needs to get got more often. Carr's a rock star and the only thing he's missing for the gig are Michael Wolff's Steven Tyler-esque lips. A cockwaffle if there ever was one. #arguments
A "wrestling match" was how Patterson characterized his own internal thought process in deciding upon a person to succeed Senator Clinton. We now see that it was more a mud wrestling match devised by this accidental Governor for his own amusement and advancement. He believed that the longer he waited to announce his decision, the greater the suspense, and the more publicity he would garner. Both the process and the decision reflect poorly on Patterson. His next decision, whether to run for reelection, will be less protracted and more obvious. He will either not run, or will lose to Andrew Cuomo. And Kirsten Gillibrand, like Charles Goodell, the last Senator chosen by a NY Governor, will also be gone by the 2010 primaries.
@Sarah Ostrinsky: I don't get why he had to turn this into a big game. Did he think it would help him function better as Governor? Or help get him re-elected next year (which is the prism through which he sees everything that he does)? Or was he just bored and wanted a few laughs?
The Times has a big article right now on how badly Paterson has hurt himself through this whole thing. I agree with them - that's the real story here. The way he has conducted this appointment process, and the way he continues to conduct things now that it's over, could very well be sealing his fate as governor in the next election. Or, should I say, sealing his fate as ex-governor?
This whole thing has been a big farce, and as the Times pointed out, it's pretty difficult to piss off all three of New York's most powerful political families (the Kennedys, Clintons and Cuomos), especially since they all pretty much hate each other. Yet that's just what he did. Add in Carolyn McCarthy, who's probably the most powerful downstate rep, and he's in some serious trouble.
While I'm relieved that she's not going to be our senator, I think that Paterson's people trashing her is just gratuitously cruel and petty.
Paterson botched this from the get-go, mostly because he's always kept his eye on the '10 election, instead of who would be the best person to be in the Senate, representing our interests. And now he will almost certainly not win that election.
I liked Paterson at first. But between his speech to the raving Zionist mob at the UN two weeks back urging continued murder of children in Gaza and this poorly-handled bit of psycho-drama I'm pretty much ready to go back to voting for the Green party in state-wide contests. Ick.
@scarletmenace: The so-called "Palestinians" are the ONLY ONES responsible for any "Palestinian" deaths. They use their women and children as human shields; they actually send pregnant women into bomb factories when they get word those places may come under attack, and then they blame the Israelis for the murder of innocent civilians! Why don't you worry about the millions -- not even hundreds-of-thousands -- of murders perpetrated against the Arab people by their own leaders? Israel has every right to protect its citizens, who for no good reason, are always under attack. How come the "Palestinians" didn't initiate attacks against Jordan and Egypt when they were "occupied" by both, pre-1967? Israel should be given a Human Rights Award for the way they treat the "Palestinians," people who have consistently vowed to destroy the Jewish state, and repeatedly acted upon that vow, too. For heaven's sake, the Muslim and Arab world has around 22 countries, so can't they leave that little strip of land alone, and in peace?
@Tweezergal: @scarletmenace: "But between his speech to the raving Zionist mob at the UN two weeks back urging continued murder of children in Gaza." And what's more "raving" and "mobish" than targeting Israeli nursery schools, which have absolutely no connetion to artillery and warfare? Do a bit a more reading, scarletmenace -- it will serve you well -- and you'll no longer be a menace. What's more "raving" than attacking the World Trade Center, or more "mobish" than Hezbollah and Hamas in the first place?
@Tweezergal: Hey Tweezergal wow you just threw every rationalization, lie and smokescreen of Israeli propaganda from the last sixty years at me in one short paragraph. I'm impressed.
Hey remember in kindergarten when you did something bad to somebody who cried and then your mom yelled at you and you said "she made me do it". I bet that didn't work too well back then either.
Too bad the several hundred children the Israelis just murdered aren't laughing. Here, sweetheart is a picture of a Hamas terrorist after being caressed by American-made Israeli concern.
@Tweezergal: Tweezergal..I'm sorry did Gazan children attack the World Trade Center? Or did you basically just say "kill all the sand ni*gers"? Do I need to post ANOTHER picture of a dead Palestinian child?
@scarletmenace: You're the one who INITIATED a string of worthless rationalizations and sick, classic anti-Semitic stereotypes -- a mob of murderous Zionists (Jews), indeed -- really disgusting! Oh, wait, you're going to retort that every time someone makes a criticism of Israel, they're labeled anti-Semitic. Why don't you show me pictures of Jenin, a "massacre" wholly created by the "Palestinians"? They do great sleight-of-hand photographs, creating horrendous scenes out of whole cloth. How anyone can claim I'm employing rationalizations, when the facts speak for themselves, is beyond belief -- but then so are "Palestinian" claims of unprovoked abuse. Fact: The Arab and Muslim world has at least 22 countries -- enough said. How is that a rationalization? Shouldn't that be sufficient space, especially when the Jews, the boat-people of the world, just want a small piece of land? Explain the rationalization on that fact ALONE. Also, I didn't understand your comment, "kill all the sand ni*gers." I don't use language like that, so it's beyond (beneath) me. Why don't you plaster posters and pictures all over, so we can see either how the Palestinians are killing their own children or how adept they are at photographic tricks.
@The One: I have not offered any opinion on anything other than Governor Paterson and the Israeli assault on Gazan civilians. Do not presume to know what my opinion is of any other world or regional events. Why do you keep bring up other subjects?
Also why do you two keep putting quotes around "Palestinians". Is that like calling them "human beings" so you don't have to feel bad when they are murdered?
@Tweezergal: Tweezergal, you can't have my home, it's mine. It doesn't matter if my relatives have their own home or if other Americans have their own home or if other people of German-Irish extraction have their own home. My home is my home; it's my right. Don't you think the Palestinians in Gaza have their own rights to their homes or their very lives?
Stop throwing out the 22-muslim countries bullshit. That's an irrelevant fact.
I see now unable to defend your own arguments you're claiming the pictures of dead children are all faked. and resorting to calling me antisemitic. Sad.
How do you sleep at night? Your dehumanization of Palestinians is vile.
@scarletmenace: This is my last comment to you, because it's all so a waste of my time. I put quotes aroudn "Palestinians" because no one ever heard of the "Palestinians," or their "plight," when they were "occupied" by Jordan and Egypt. Are you a Mideast demographer, do you know if they lived on what is now Israeli soic from Time Immemorial -- a "Palestinian" claim, or to use your own words, "a lie, a rationalization, a smokescreen." And it's ludicrous of you to state I'm bringing up "other subjects," just look at this thread. What I did was RESPOND to your vicious anti-Semitic comment that had no business here to begin with. I don't have to presume anything about you; the facts are right in front of my face. As far as my conscience, it's doing just fine. The problem with yours, well there is no problem with yours because you don't have a conscience -- period. You're actually pretty scary -- the kind of person that knows not of what he (she) speaks, kind of like Mel Gibson. I wonder how much more Israel will have to suffer because of people to suffer because of people like you.
@scarletmenace: I know more than enough about your opinions on this one issue, thanks to your inappropriate comments right here. I also found it interesting that you seem to believe (at least based on what you've posted here) that Israelis are purposely killing "Palestinian" kids just for shits and giggles, all while ignoring what Hamas has been doing (lobbing rockets at Israel for years - killing Israeli children - while then hiding themselves and their military hardware among civilians). Tells me all I need to know about you.
What "other subjects" did I bring up? The fact that Israeli children children are being intentionally murdered, while "Palestinian" deaths are accidental, as it is well proven that the IDF goes to great effort to minimize civilian casualties. And if you try to claim that the Israelis are intentionally killing "Palestinians," tell me why Israel didn't just go in and totally flatten Gaza in a single day.
I put quotes around "Palestinians" because before Israeli statehood, the only people known by that name were the Jews living there. There is not a single thing ethnically, religiously, linguistically, culturally or in any other way distinctive about the Arabs who claim to be "Palestinians."
Just like certain odious elements take a sicko joy in twisting history and referring to Israel as being like Nazis, the using of the term "Palestinians" for people who never were known as such some 60 years ago is just as messed up.
Oops. Looks like you have quite the anti-Israel obsession, and a habit of dragging your bigotry through totally unrelated threads. [gawker.com]
In a post about the NY Post and its War on Geese, you felt compelled to bring up Israel - in a negative manner, of course.
@Tweezergal: why then does my Palestinian friend's grandmother have a passport from the British Mandate that declares her... wait for it... a Palestinian? I am neutral as can be on the fight between Israel and Palestine, but let's not suggest that Palestinians are a fabricated ethnic group. (Nor should anyone suggest the destruction of Israel).
@The One: Yes if you put quotes around the name "Palestinians" you don't have to think of them as "people." Thank you, massuh, for only killing 1300 of them instead of all them.
@scarletmenace: I've already explained it, yet your obsession compels you to twist and distort what I write in order to fit your agenda. The same sicko agenda that you try to force into totally unrelated posts.
Gillibrand (the woman Paterson picked) is the daughter of an upstate politician who is mired in the corruption scandal involving Joseph Bruno (which will probably send Bruno to jail for the rest of his life).
Gillibrand is unlikely to get re-elected when people find out how closely her father is involved with Bruno.
There are actually some parallels between Gillibrand and Blago from Chicago. Both of them are children of political bigwheels who owe everything to a corrupt political system.
might i add everyone is talking about giuliani running against paterson for governor but i expect him to run (and win) this senate seat. i am so dreading it.
@Smith: Interesting. With Peter King already publicly salivating for this Senate seat (he's surely bummed out that Caroline didn't get it), I don't know if Rudy will go for it.
Rudy might go for the Governor race, although if Andy Cuomo knocks Paterson out in a primary, I don't know if Rudy wants another defeat on his record.
Gillibrand is not the Sarah Palin you think she is. She is in a very conservative district, and you will soon see that now that she's representing a liberal state, she will be boting likewise. Your predictions of her 2010 demise will be proved wrong soon enough.
@Lysergic Asset: Of course your question is a good one. But at this point in the history of the country is what is needed is another "blue dog" in the Senate? I know all politics is local and this is not quite a "blago" but, really.
@belltolls: Oh, I agree. I can just see the glee on the right wingers' faces when Gilly (?) starts voting with the Republicans & against Obama... not that she will on everything, but one issue will be more than enough to run with.
All of this may be false. All of it. Maybe Ms Kennedy was never even considered. Maybe it's all a press blurb. All we know is, the gov has appointed a gunut from Republican country where they think any number of human dead (around 12,000 per annum) is worthwhile if testosterone-challenged guys can keep it up shooting harmless critters and maybe the postman if he gets too uppity.
