I don't want to cast aspersion at the dead or anything, but I'm wondering if the massive amounts of hair spray Kemp used to mold his hair into a helmet had more to do with the cancer than the conservative movement.
When I was a college lad, and before Kemp was the VP Nom, there were rumors among Buffalo Gay community leaders he was closeted. Anyone else hear that?
Also, when I was a journalism intern the Erie county legislature seemed to be a hotbed of Football -to- Republican politics action. Even my ex-gym teacher ran. Those were the days.
@choinski: I remember those rumors. They never went anywhere or had any substance to them. They were probably untrue, though it was a more civilized time and political rivals wouldn't have spent a fortune trying to unearth whatever salacious mud could be thrown at the guy, unless it was really important to do so. Fortunately for Kemp, Bill Moyers was no longer a White House advisor at the time.
@Swordfish: I don't think OJ would kill him. He seems to confine his actual homicidal rages to female victims. He *might* have slapped his sunglasses off of his face, though. Or maybe robbed him in the most clumsy, crack-headed way possible with a gang of pitiful losers to back him up.
But, no, OJ's still in jail in Clark County as far as I know.
This is the dumbest, most self-destructive thing they could do. Do they think arguing that the Democratic candidate is a friend of evil Republicans will make those Democratic voters switch parties?
@SinisterRouge: Bob Graham is another. Jack Reed. Carl Levin. Look at the list of Dems who voted against the Iraq war. A vote scheduled, by the way, just three weeks before mid-term election day.
I see Specter as a spoiler for the Democrats. So now we get him instead of a real Democrat, which is what we would have gotten had the Republicans defeated him with a Limbaugh/Cheney neo-con in the primary. Instead, we're now stuck with Arlen Specter for another six years, at least.
In reality, what this has done is taken the PA. election and turned it from a neocon vs. moderate liberal contest to a neocon vs. old-school conservative contest.
How is this actually good news for the Democrats, assuming it's actually issues that matter and not party labels?
@badasscat: The smarter pundits are already saying that the Dems still need to try and run an aggressive candidate in the primary. Better to have Specter than Toomey, but better still to have a progressive candidate than Specter.
@if_i_only_had_a_heart: Having Specter in the party gives it the illusion of a big tent: the GOP can't use the "they're all just socialist nutjobs out of touch with mainstream America" excuse if they have conservative Dems like Specter and Bayh out front. Believe me, he will get a committee chair the moment one is available, and the Democratic Party will thrust him out front at every opportunity.
Apparently the one thing upon which Republicans and Democrats can finally agree is that no one wants to be a Republican. When Joe the Plumber comes around do we have to take him?

(And no, Gov. 'Fast Eddie' Rendell is not who I had in mind. I want someone who doesn't let the little head do the thinking for the big head.)
