She is as stringent and wholesale an example of the Christian Right's despicable doublespeak and hatred that has been poisoning our country for too long as there is in modern American society. She's an avatar, she's a monster.
Carrie Prejean is a hateful bigot who will not tolerate being called on her shit. And we should not give her any amount of credence for it. That any member of the media, old Triceratops Larry King included, would give her any kind of due is just another shameful and sad example of the fact that rhetoric against gay people in this country is tacitly tolerated by popular media, because some wingnut idiots who believe that someone lived inside a whale for a few months threaten righteous rage if said media doesn't give lip service to their ridiculous, completely untrue, ancient assertions about what makes people's sexuality.
The tyranny of religion in this country MUST END if we expect to get anything good and decent and progressive done in this fucked up swamp of a nation we live in. I've had it with this spectacular waste of life, and I've had it with people like Larry King putting up with her bullshit to meet a bottom line.
I'm fucking done. I'm outraged. Say "Who cares about Carrie Prejean??" all you want, I CARE. This woman is an enormous example of why gay teenagers across this country kill themselves in droves every year. Gayness is equated with ugliness in every arena. I've called these anti-gay-marriage laws Jym Crow laws before and I've gotten dinged for it. But what else can we call it? There is legislation on the books in Washington State right now that fits, to a T, the definition of "separate but equal."
The argument that it's not akin to racism or Jim Crow is, what? That JC laws were far more strict? Of course they were, but we've evolved since then. And forget marriage. Let's talk about the military. People of all skin colors are allowed to serve openly in the military. And yet gays are not. Both traits are something beyond the individual's control. Thus discrimination based on those lines is undeniably bigoted and disgusting.
There is no difference at work here. I know that sex is taboo, and especially the idea of two guys butt-fucking is absolutely heinous and repulsive to many people, but it is a fact of humanity. To self-righteously deny the fundamental right to equality of 30 million Americans (and counting), because you find the idea of two penises touching, is to cast this country in a public light of immaturity and ignorance. Is that really the face we want to present while going forward in this globalized world?
I'm so ashamed of America and Americans--of Californians, of Maineiacs, of harpies like Carrie Prejean and those that give her airtime.

Spokeswoman also said that legalizing gay marriage would lead to "teaching homosexuality in schools," whatever the hell that means. When I pressed her for details she couldn't explain or elaborate on the concept. It was just a "slippery slope" to let gays get married. But, "It's not that we're against gay people or their rights." It's just that we're so desperate to keep them as second-class citizens that we're going to make up reasons why they shouldn't get married.
It also annoys the hell out of me when Conservatives complain about "liberal bias" in the media when all they do is talk shit and expect journalists to regurgitate their bigotry. I write for a news wire in California, and every freaking statement we get from the state Republican Party is 100 percent vitriolic/ douchy. Insults, name-calling, condescension. Instead of "Democrat" or "public option," they say "the tax and spend crowd" and "socialized medicine." Then they cry foul if journalists don't repeat their propaganda.
My attitude is screw it, if you don't give me something other than juvenile name-calling, I'm not quoting you. It makes me want to tell their spokesman, "You do realize that if I refer to Democrats as the 'tax and spend crowd' for you, it's only fair that I quote the Democrats who call you the 'soulless vampires who profit off human suffering' crowd. That's cool with you, right?"

When Hilllary ran for POTUS, she did so wanting white women to claim the under-privileged status of all women. Then she winked and said, "Vote for me, I'm white." It's one of the main reasons she lost. The Clintons had enormous sympatico from many black voters. It ended there.
Racism is a horrible thing to wrangle in the world. So is homophobia. So is sexism. But they're not the same things.
That said, I feel you, Richard Lawson. I hate the Christalibans claiming their gawd supports their hate. I hate the politicization of gaydom as if it were a choice. And I will not stand silent in the face of that fuckery. But I won't let that struggle get twisted, either. There are black gays and lesbians whose struggles are something that would make yours seem merely inconvenient, in comparison.

Try to remember that people are murdered for all kinds of reasons-- because they are black, because they are gay, because they are women, because they are alive--- there are murderers who will kill anyone for anything. State sanctioned murders of black people by police are still occurring. Not so for the white gays.
That's why homophobia is not equivalent to racism. Gay-hate is bad enough. To conflate it with racism is just incorrect. Being white, gay, and racist, is not the rarity that this illegitimate interpretation confers. #carrieprejean

I understand that you don't want to water down the significance of Jim Crow by lumping in other persecuted segments of society. Nor am I trying to diminish the African American condition in modern day America - particularly as it relates to our justice system. What I am trying to say is that regardless of whatever minority segment one belongs to, any form of discrimination is wrong. To make it a contest of who struggles more dilutes any struggle as you're shifting the focus of injustice to who has it worse. You're basically reducing it to a pissing contest.
So - if someone who is ghey wants to liken his or her current struggle to that of *any* persecuted group, then I am certainly not going to stop him and I will *still* continue to support him in his fight for equality. As I said, this referendum and socially accepted form of bigotry is the Jim Crow of 2009.
I don't think you're limiting inequality but I think you're getting a bit hung up on the verbiage (and the whole prison bit - really? Someone has to be wrongfully incarcerated based on colour for discrimination to actually be classified as such???) and you're missing the intent. To me, *all* forms of bigotry are fundamentally wrong and need to be eradicated - not limited to race. #carrieprejean
