"Iranians are to be depicted as savage, blood-lusting fanatics as often as narratively possible. We recognize this poses a particular challenge to the upcoming Hannah Montana feature, Battlestar Galactica, Daytime Soaps, and numerous other projects. Nonethless, creativity is a cornerstone of this profession and we expect professionalism. Iranians must look really, really ugly. Scary ugly. A permissible expection would be a young Iranian woman only if, soon after being introduced, she is violated in some horrible fashion by a very, very, frighteningly, repuslively ugly male Iranian--preferably her husband or father. Otherwise, ixnay on the exysay ranianiay abesbay.
Americans should walk away from every film we release feeling two things: entertained and God, why doesn't someone fucking nuke those Iranian sand-niggers already? I mean, Jesus. Once you've stomped Iraq... just get it all over with!
And finally, in light of a $14 million opening weekend, Julia Roberts is officially no longer America's Sweetheart."

Ayatollahs does not = Iranians.
Also: As much as I despise actors that become activists as part of their public image, I think what Penn might be objecting to is the personification of honor killings as a method of demonizing Iranians in particular. When white or Hispanic or Asian husbands murder their wives out of jealousy they're called crimes of passion. Indian Hindu women are often murdered in "dowry killings".
So I think maybe, Penn is just objecting to this idea of utilizing the phenomenon of honor killings to demonize Iranians as part of a larger tend in the USA of making the Iranians out to be the Next Big Enemy.
I'm not saying I agree with him completely, but I do think it's more than just "Muslim magic" that Penn is attributing to his insistence in being cut out of the film. Maybe it just smells bad -- like they was "24" smells bad to a lot of people.

I know that liberals have a need to equivocate like this, but the difference is huge, and lies in cultural acceptability.
See, when a guy kills his wife here (for whatever reason), he is ususally reviled by society, disowned by family, and goes to jail for a long long time.
When an 'honor killing' is performed is many Muslim countries, it is quite frankly accepted as the man's right. The penalties are often light, if they exist at all, and the man is usually not ostracized from his family or community.
And that is the difference. You're welcome.

Get your head out of the sand and learn to use Google.

I guarantee you if you;re found to have murdered your wife in the world's largest Muslim country (which also happens to be democratic) -- Indonesia -- you will go to jail just like that WHITE BRITISH man went to jail recently for murdering his wife for updating her Facebook profile to say she was "single." (But nobody called that an honor killing because this man wasn't Pakistani.)
While you have Google open, why don't you read about Hudud (tribal, not Islamic) laws in Pakistan, a country that elected (twice) a woman prime minister. And you will find plenty of outrage among those wicked Muslims.

Thank you Gawkimo. I suggest that those who want to equate Islam with hatred- try to actually acquaint yourself with some Muslim people beforehand. I'm sure most of you who are spewing out numbers and demanding us to check Google have never actually had an actual conversation with a Muslim person or shared a meal. The few I have acquainted myself with are lovely and generous, and some of the most humble people I've ever encountered, period. I am a Hindu btw.

He's one of those guys who *was* Spicoli in real life--who then got super famous and all concerned-y so he's had to act verrrry smart and insightful and he mangles it so. He's not articulate; not even a little bit, so that when I watch him I worry that I'm getting Alzheimers or something. My brain begins to ache.
