I don't quite remember Conan's setups being so obvious on his other show but his question "Did the cast hang out in France and Germany?" and yielding the resulting anecdote came off really rehearsed. I know they rehearse the show, but it seems like he kept that more masked on the late night version. .. LA's doin some strange stuff to ol' Conan..
Speaking of Brad Pitt -- I watched him on the Today Show this morning and he was questioned about running for Mayor of New Orleans(I can't believe I just typed that. No wonder Twilight is so popular), he said "I'm running on the gay marriage, no religion, legalization and taxation of marijuana platform. I don't have a chance."
I'm all for people marrying and divorcing who they want. I can't understand why marijuana was criminalized, but c'mon Brad, banning religion? My parents would have nowhere to go on Sunday's except to my house! Let them continue to flock
@HarlanKeenan: Okay, this contains video clip SPOILERS:
BJ Novak talks about a scene where he is being filmed in the back of a truck with Brad Pitt. During downtime, Pitt is asking him a lot of questions, which Conan finds odd. Then Novak is nervous about asking Pitt questions because he doesn't want to come off like a tabloid reporter.
Novak later sees Pitt at the Golden Globes and despite the fact that they have now worked on a movie, he is nervous about approaching Pitt in his element. Novak wonders if he didn't create the entire experience in his head.
Novak then talks about Tarantino. He says that Tarantino hangs out with the cast regularly. Like CajunBoy mentioned they went to a bar called Tarantinos, where the Germans were aloof. Novak compares it to Michael Jordan visiting his own home when he was ten and seeing all of the posters, but Novak not offering him a lemonade.
He then said that eventually people came up for autographs with posters. He and Conan mock the German accent as sounding evil.
They then show a clip where Pitt's and Novak's characters are captured by the Nazis and being interviewed by the villain of the movie. Novak finds out that his nickname among the Nazis is "The Little Man" and is appropriately offended.
The whole thing was actually funnier than this, but those are the essential elements of the video.
In modest defense of Brad Pitt, basically every Tarantino performance looks horrible if you look at it in the span of a short movie clip. It's all kitsch, really -- but it usually works over a longer period of work.
Maybe it's a shit trailer - done by the kid they got in to attract the Playstation crowd. It did one thing for me, though - sucked all the joy out of my morning.
Who's the euro movimaker that Quentin idolizes? After having seen Pulp Fiction he was told by Quentin something like "it's an homage to you." His response was that he would would have preferred for Quentin just to give him some money instead. Butchered the story, but you get the idea.
@misslinda: Here's a secret that women don't realize. Brad Pitt's big fanbase today? The base that lusts after him sexually?
I'll give you a clue - it ain't women or teh geighs, it's hetero men. They have had a big ole chubby for him since Fight Club and it's not gonna go away until Brad's body goes away. Hetero men (and I am one) lurv Brad because he's done a lot to define masculinity to men who don't want to have to think about the concept of masculinity. He's someone simple to emulate and at times, imitate. So we mens dig him more than we care to admit. It's true! Ask hetero men what they think of him and you will hear positive words. Not so from the ladies though. Wonder why?
Grindhouse set was a spot-on re-creation of bad film-making and cheap theater ambiance. But it was kind of a stand-alone homage to a period of sleazy narrative. Tarantino's stylized exploitation might be devolving into self-parody. I hope not.
I can't stand BJ Novak. I know intellectually it is an irrational hatred, since I really only hate his character on The Office. But it's a deep, burning hatred unlike anything I have ever felt for a fictional character, and plus he has buggy eyes.
@PrincessKashmir: I admit, I had to go look up BJ Novak. (I don't like the American Office, plus I don't live there and Hulu won't hook me up.) But I don't like him based on the row of photos that pop up on his imdb.com page -- he looks EXACTLY THE SAME in every picture. NO expression whatsoever. Ick!
@PrincessKashmir: and I thought I was the only one. I think as an actor he might have one speed, but who knows.
He stirs up irrational, teenage girl insecurities in me too. He perpetually reminds me of some of my brother's friends who made fun of me and thought I was a spaz. OK, I was a little bit of a spaz, but a cute one and I didn't need their charity! I didn't! I'm just sayin' Really.
I don't know about this. I kind of liked where it was going until the end there, when Mel Brooks threw a temper tantrum while dressed as Hitler in an ermine cape. That was a bit of a WTF moment.
@Colonel Mustard: Hitler's funny when you give him a prop to work with. To wit, Charlie Chaplin in the Great Dictator as he plays with an inflatable globe.
@Colonel Mustard: It felt like a deleted scene from the Hyundai commercial with all the angry foreign car company CEOs that aired during the Superbowl.
