Things are absolutely getting worse, and it's pretty clear that if North Korea views Ling and Lee as diplomatic pawns, our government sure as hell doesn't.

Well, this is a little bit naive to say. The Government very rarely does diplomatic things in broad public view. I think the very singular silence on this issue, and the amount of people in power who are saying nothing at all about it, points to some pretty heavy State Department negotiations happening in some small quiet North Korean back room.

@Pope John Peeps II: Here's the thing: the silence isn't singular. Laura's high profile sister Lisa's been hitting the morning programs, pleading for her sister's release. The South Korean media is watching, and when Lisa flares up, they do, too. She did Today and Larry King, she continues to hold vigils and speak out. Now, let's assume the government is definitely working as behind the scenes as they can on this: why haven't they given Lisa a "can it and hang tight while we work things out" directive? Because they want some awareness of the issue? Because they'd just rather not communicate with the family? I'm not sure. I do know this, though: Current isn't saying anything, Gore hasn't said a word, the only thing said was - as pointed out by @cocobanal - Hillary Clinton's plea in the same hour she announced that we might make N. Korea a terror state again. Also, @if_i_only_had_a_heart: This isn't enough reason to assume the worst of North Korea?

@Foster Kamer: Maybe Lisa's the only one not willing to listen to the State department when they say "pipe down". You can't simply silence an individual, even if what they're doing is stupid or counterproductive. Certainly Gore of all people would know exactly what might be happening right now, and how potentially fragile the situation is? Maybe that's why he's shut up about it.

I certainly wouldn't think that this new administration would simply toss these two women to the wolves.

@if_i_only_had_a_heart: also: the ny post hates gore reflexively and rejects climate change as surely as flat earthers still think the sun goes around this planet

please don't repeat what the ny post says; if they say it's raining outside, you should look out the window first becuz they're probly lying about that, too

if i had to choose between believing that (a) al gore is doing everything possible to free those people, including working with the state dept and believing that (b) the ny post just hates al gore, (a) is always the win

that said, i like your work a lot
