The real issue here and the reason why NYC should be on the hook for $1.5M is the fact that the cop lied in his police arrest report by saying he was assaulted by the cyclist.

Cops don't learn lessons well, it's costly examples like this that may eventually trickle down into the folks on the street.

The cyclist was cleared of all charges and the officer, Patrick Pogan, was fired for filing a perjurious report, was indicted, and is currently awaiting trial.

On a sort-of related note, I fucking HATE Critical Mass.

I live in Chicago, and I got stuck in a line of traffic waiting. Which wouldn't have been so bad, except that I was taking my wife to the hospital for an appointment; because of the fifteen minute wait, the hospital called and said that we'd have to reschedule the appointment.

I completely get the point: get cars off the road, show the power of bikes, and so on. But I was driving an I-Go car that I'd checked out JUST for this appointment. And surprise surprise, when I emailed the people at Critical Mass to ask them about my situation, and they never emailed back.

FUCK Critical Mass.

While I think what this cop did was pretty revolting, that in no way means I think his fall off his bike is worth $1.5 million of my tax dollars. Let the guy who pushed him pay for that.

@Unfun: I did see the video. But more than de minimus jail time is too much. I cannot defend what the cop did, and -- as Mediahoho noted -- the cover-up is awful. And he should be punished. But because lengthy prison terms are not the answer for many whom I suspect you'd feel sympathy for, consistency dictates that this man not got to jail for 5 years. For a fucking shove. Keep in mind, dude will have to serve his sentence is solitary confinement. Does the assholish shove and the cover-up warrant 5 years alone in a cell? One year? Come on.

@Helman: Seems like you're more arguing that punitive jail and prison terms are mostly a bad solution, less defending the cop (who I think all can agree is a fucking asshole). Incarceration IS mostly unhelpful, and caging this cop like an animal for a year or five is pretty pointless. But, if the question is of proportionality, it makes more sense to ask whether what this guy did is worse than drug offenses or thefts that carry five year sentences. To me, peace officers assaulting people (even annoying ones) is worse than someone having a shit-ton of drugs or some such.

I've observed "Critical Mass" parades/demonstrations in Berkeley, Seattle and San Francisco and have no sympathy for Christopher Long.

Pogan is off the force and may go to jail, though I'd guess probation is more likely. But Long? He gets to continue to pose (as do all those who participate in Critical Mass) as an example of a superior human being trying to bring enlightenment to ... ? Well, I'm not sure who. The people trying to get around in whatever city these assholes are tying up on a given Friday night are not likely to be more more cyclist friendly as a result of their experience.

It is not clear what political goal CM is trying to achieve (as opposed to feeling morally superior) or why once monthly traffic jams are likely to accomplish it. So far in the several years since I first observed this nonsense I have not read of one change accomplished as a result of its actions - mass transit comes about because people want to get out of their cars - not because a critical mass of cyclists tie up the roads paid for in considerable with gasoline taxes (of which said cyclists pay none)

@sls67: You know, I'm kind of indifferent to Critical Mass, but I've lived in the city long enough to know that theirs is a counter-demonstration to that highly political demonstration that goes on every Friday night in the first place, that is, the demonstration that against every ounce of good sense, against imprecations by authority figures not to do it, against the proven fact that doing so undermines the health and well being of everyone: the big Friday night fuckoff to the city, I'm driving in and/or driving out along with every other jagoff in the tri-state area in my nasty-ass car, travel problems and air quality be damned.

Is it consciously political? No, just mindlessly inconsiderate. Do motorists pay to use the roads? Well, last time I drove (and I have been a car leaser in NYC) the roads don't look that great to me. But I'd sooner look to some pin dick in an SUV than a bicyclist to blame that on.

But you're right about Critical Mass affecting any change. People are generally stupid enough that they'll keep driving whenever they feel like it until gas reaches $50 gallon. And then when it's over it's over.

So my conclusion is yeah, fuck CM, fuck bicyclists, fuck pedestrians, fuck the world, lower the fucking price to 25 cents a gallon and let whoever wants to drive their shriveled little balls off getting down the shore or to the Hamptons or back to Rye for some rye. Do it. Burn it all.

Or has it never occurred to you why Critical Mass holds its demonstrations on Friday night?
