Way too much makeup. And, as a chub (though a few kilos less than Beth) I'm all for accepting non-anorexic bodies, but come on. Fat is not healthy. My blood pressure is ok, my cholesterol is fine, and I exercise a lot, but these extra 20 (or more ) pounds are like carrying a 20 (or more) pound suitcase around every bloody moment. And frankly, if you (or I) are that overweight, you probably aren't eating as well as you should. It's one thing to reject the concentration camp aesthetic; but don't glorify fat. Or eye shadow.

But part of me is annoyed at how everytrendy fash mag is on the bandwagon, each taking their turn to feature Beth naked and congratulate themselves as if they were some subversive visionaries- and they're all doing it.

They're using her as the notion of a moment, ready to be discarded. Plus ca change and all that.

@trulymadlyme: Wozers, y'all. I knew there was a bit of strife between the Gawker kids and the Jezebel readers, but I didn't expect this thread to turn into Jezebel family therapy time! I was hoping we'd get a few comments on how Ditto adopted Tyra Bank's joy of bleaching perfectly healthy hair blond on ANTM.

To stick up for the Jez (which I do love), there is a lot of value in the expectation that commenters treat each other with respect. I find it refreshing, considering the Freepers, and the xoxo types that spew all sorts of mean, hateful tripe on the regular.

And there are people who pop up there on the regular solely to stir up some shit. And hortense and the rest of the editors do a valuable service in nipping that in the bud. Commenters can continue to add to the discussion without the noise.

Re: body snark? I won't say that there are times when I think to post body snark, but I really do check myself. I learned a lot about images and its role in encouraging a really unhealthy environment for women (and men). To me, I haven't thought much about it, but taking time to make fun of the ridiculousness of a picture (like my comment above) versus making fun of the person for the way they look has made me funnier and more observant...

@TillieHarper: omfg. OMFG. I hate this. Once there was a snap judgment post of Salma Hayek and her husband who, I am sorry, looked like a fucking monster in the picture. So I wrote some little joke about how they were going shopping to get him a new fresh pair of bolts, or something. I wasn't even talking about her! But it didn't matter, and the Jezebel vigilante justice was brutal. Sigh.

@jobsworth: I proudly wear my badge of being kicked off Jezebel. I mentioned that a picture of Kathleen Sebelius, Obama's Health and Human Services Sec'y, (a very unflattering picture BTW) made her look like she had a pickle up her ass. I thought it odd that Jezebel would choose such an unflattering pic of someone to whom they were uttering such praise. I felt like I was attacked by a swarm of killer bees, each trying to out-sting the other.

I laugh my ass off at the self-indulgent crazies that post over there now. Try reading it with a glass or two of wine under your belt. Better than watching any reality tv show, IMHO.
