Hopefully they'll post that video where the brothers throw coins at Gavin Newsom's feet while yelling, "Dance for your jelly, boy! Dance!" Newsom proves quite talented with the soft-shoe, which prompts Peter Getty to burst into tears. "Why does he like you better? YOU'RE NOT EVEN HIS REAL SON!" Peter yells as he runs out of the room, arms flailing at his sides. Then Newsom picks up the coins.

I'm sorry that so many people seem to dislike our blog, but by no means am I surprised. I expect it to take time, but hopefully we'll win a few of you over. I don't regret anything we wrote, but I do regret that our post didn't allow comments. That unfortunate decision was made without my being informed, and has since been corrected; our future posts will allow people to share their opinions, which we welcome. Since practically none of the comments here address the article itself, I'd like to express my relief that it was so poorly written, so filled with unwarranted venom, so nakedly self-contradictory, and so nakedly hateful and so smug in jumping to absurd conclusions about our motives, reasoning and "self-awareness" (although Mr. Nolan concedes that he doesn't even know whether we're "good guys" or not, he somehow knows better than we do how we perceive ourselves). I'm proud that we hold our writing to a higher standard than this.

@PeterGetty: It doesn't matter how you perceive yourselves, as that has already been established by the theme of your blog itself: rich, well-to-do lazy trust fund babies who have endless cash to blow on bullshit. You're somewhat like Michael Jackson circa late-90s where he was sitting back taking his massive cash and blowing it on 6-foot tall jade pottery and diamond-encrusted porcelain comedy/drama masks. The only difference being that he did work for his money.

And it's fine that you perceive yourselves the way you do, but since you're publishing a blog for all to see, you must realize you are inviting everyone to form their own perceptions -- most of which who do not have the money you have will likely be irritated. Not because you're rich -- plenty of poor people love Oprah -- they don't have the discontent for her as a rich woman because she doesn't outwardly and blatantly flaunt it as much as you appear to. We all know she's rich, we know she flies on private jets and has a life of luxury but she doesn't rub it in our faces.

Also: Are these dudes related to actor Balthazar Getty? His great-grandfather is Jean Paul Getty, founder of the Getty Oil Company. I would assume there is a connection.

I'm trying to work up my own class rage. I keep coming up empty. Hating rich people for having too much free time on their hands seems counterproductive. I do agree with this pearl of wisdom: "If you have any aesthetic sense for books, movies, or music, money can in fact buy you a considerable degree of happiness, and not much money at that." If you have an appreciation for such things, you will never need a designer wardrobe or a luxury vehicle!

@SeaBassTian: I think the Gawker piece took issue mostly with the fact that they're pushing a blog about richness as a "state of being." Not blogging about their latest Braque acquisition, or about how much they enjoyed purchasing the Metropolitan Opera, or whatever. But just giving us a first-person account of what it's like to be rich..

I hope it kinda goes like this:

"Today I woke up and smiled upon a new day, filled with the recognition of the fact that yes, I am rich. I brushed my teeth with a supersonic toothbrush that proles could not only not afford, but could not even afford the magazines it's advertised in. Then I pulled a velvet cord and summoned five menservants who helped me ease into my $2,000 bespoke sweatpants. As they hoisted me on a pillow stuffed with pheasant feathers and carried me downstairs on their shoulders, I suddenly remembered something: I am filthy rich. And I was overcome with gloom: most un-rich people will never, sadly, get to experience such a glorious ritual. Luckily, my sadness only lasted a nanosecond, because it occurred to me that I possess a considerable degree of happiness, which is a direct function of me being rich." Etc. etc. etc.

@snugbug: I think I would have been more incensed if they embodied the typical wealthy douchey stereotype. If their blog consisted of "If they have no bread, let them eat cake." pronouncements, I may have had more reason to blow a fuse. But their biggest crime, besides being idly rich, is the bland style of writing that they employ. With the multitude of options that are available, who wants to waste time on this blog? Unless your prime motivation is to mock!

Actually, I think this is a rather brilliant piece of PR for the SFC. These guys are laying it on a little heavy ("ideally, HDTV," like that's such a luxury?), as if the purpose of this whole thing is to piss people off and garner attention.

Wouldn't be surprised if the whole thing turns out to be a prank. We thought about doing this kind of thing at Spy--just create two of the most annoying characters we could think of and publish their "story." Problem was, everyone we tested it on took it way too seriously.

Think about it: anger = attention. Who's not going to check this out in SF? And are they really related to the "Getty" family, or are they just two guys named Getty (or using pseudonyms)?

I guess they didn't get the noblesse oblige memo.

Since they don't have to work for a living, couldn't they be doing benevolent things that many of us would like to but can't afford. I'm sure Edward James Olmos, among others, would have some suggestions for them.
