In reply to Bill O'Reilly: Michael Jackson Isn't a Black Icon Because He Had White Kids
I don't get where Bill O'Reilly thinks he is qualified to tell black people how to

be black.  I don't even think he is qualified to tell white people how to be white,

In reply to Bill O'Reilly: Michael Jackson Isn't a Black Icon Because He Had White Kids
News flash! Not all African-Americans see Michael Jackson as a black hero or icon! In fact, I'd dare say that most don't. The ones that do are the probably a) too young to realize what a real hero and role model is, b) are willing to say the most histrionic thing possible in order to become part of the national televised grieving, or c) both!

But that's super responsible to take the point of view of a small portion of the black population and then portray it as the dominant thought!

Michael Jackson is important as a pop culture idea, as a black man who become insanely famous in the eyes of the world no matter what the color. I know, it's hard to imagine this now, but there was a time when the radio and music in Domino's Pizza commercials wasn't dominated by hip-hop. Black music used to be edgy! It took MTV 2 years to play a video by a black artist. And who was that artist? Michael Jackson.

I don't care for Michael Jackson all that much. The first thing I thought when I heard he died was, "Hey, at least Prince is still alive." That being said, I think it goes without saying that moments of real happiness and peace in his life were probably few and far between. Kicking him while he's dead and pondering they ways he's "betrayed his race" or whatever is just tacky. It also shows a jaw-dropping ignorance of the man and his life, specifically on the perils of fame and the point where person no longer belongs to themselves, but instead to the world. Then again, the media and popular culture have never been big on learning from their mistakes, so I don't even know who I'm talking to.

    Bah. Coffee.

I was unlucky enough to actually have seen this exchange on TV the other night whilst looking for my Daily Show, specifically him yelling at Marc Lamont Hill. It makes me sad that there are people who take him seriously.

In reply to Bill O'Reilly: Michael Jackson Isn't a Black Icon Because He Had White Kids
As a white American, I have a question to ask black Americans on this site: do any of you resent the fact that any famous black person is dubbed a 'black icon' by the media? I'd find it insulting if say Bill O'Rielly was dubbed as a 'white icon,' as if people with white skin all share the same values, beliefs, background and upbringing because we all "look alike."

I mean, can't we all - black, white, whatever - just be mourning the loss of a fantastic singer, dancer or entertainer? Or be looking back at the life of a divisive, public figure? Will the media proclaim that the world is mourning the loss of a 'black icon' when Dr. Ben Carter dies? Or Colin Powell? Isn't that also grating to some?

    I hate TV.

    @xhack: It's absolutely infuriating.

The irony is that the only thing that encourages me to at least listen to the opinions of people like Al Sharpton (who I think is sometimes valuable as a social advocate, but in no way view as some kind of 'great black leader'), is the passionate insistence- usually by white people- that I am somehow getting special cues from Sharpton as to what to believe and think about everything. And the intense loathing people seem to feel for an activist that I'm honestly inclined to disregard on most topics. I kind of want to love Sharpton out of naughtiness.

Bill O'Reilly's entire point is based on a (flawed) belief that black people sit around waiting to be told how to feel, what to believe, what to support, who to love, presumably because we think with one ill-equipped mind. And that when Sharpton and Jackson or whomever show up, it's somehow equivalent to a community-wide vote of- this is a black thing.

I've long felt that it was in the interest of people with political and social power to declare the Al Sharpton's of the world to be "black leaders" over the Colin Powell's of the world. Either way, though, it's hard not to resent the idea overall.

@✪TheMac: The anointed "black leaders" business is certainly a legacy of racism. The implication is very much that black people are sort of mindless and uniform and respond to leadership that's based on skin color rather than on actual political beliefs. No one refers to Rush Limbaugh as a "white leader", although his constituency is most likely pretty monochromatic; he's a conservative, and the people who follow him are considered to be people who believe what he does, not people who look like he does. See, white people are individuals and have all kinds of motivations; black people are all just, uh, black people.

I had the same thought. I don't get how he can be a hero for black children when he changed his skin color. He may have been an african american who broke barriers, but his later actions should change peoples view of him. He didn't wan't to be black. That isn't something black people should be proud of.

Why isn't this a valid point? I think it is.

@uncivily obedient: I wasn't a fan and I'm not tearing my clothes but Michael's life was hardly representative of any everyday human. Every aspect of his day to day life was so far removed from what we know that his 'blackness', even if he purposely stripped the colour from his skin, is still the most accessible part of his personal narrative for many people. I don't begrudge it.

This is definitely the longest clip I've ever watched of ol' Bill-O and it's official: he makes my flesh crawl. It's really astonishing. He just spews out this word salad, peppering it liberally with "unacceptables" and "unAmericans" and dollops of (utterly species) righteous indignation and BOOM he has an entire career. Half his sentences are literally nonsense or flat out contradictions of themselves. How is it possible people fall for it? What am I saying, they fell for George Bush too...

Dialogue at the post memorial party.

JANET: Gee, you know, I have to say that I think this entire service was a bit over the top. Given the tragedy of Michael's death--and, indeed, much of his life--I'd hate to think that we might come across as a bunch of self-serving, shallow, flaky assholes.

JOE: Don't you worry your head about it, sweetie. Bill O'Rielly is going to talk about the funeral on his show tonight. We'll look real classy by comparison.

JANET: Oh! Why didn't you say so sooner? (sigh of relief)

@jasonelias: Actually, they will simply rent Staples, the home and office supply store. The memorial service will be read off Post-It notes, $2.25 for a dozen pad pack, and his fat fucking ass will be interned in the Customlite "streamliner style" filing cabinet with matte beige finish, a suitable send-off for a man destined to wind up a footnote.
