Born in San Francisco, grew up in New Haven, lives in DC.
Yep, sounds just like the typical conservative commentator: writes in favor of conservative "real America" Home Depot shoppers in suburban Kansas but wouldn't be caught dead actually living in that world.

Mr. Douthat notices (or rather he noticed suburban sprawl advocate and anti-rail city scholar Joel Kotkin noticing)

I hear you, Pareene. Douthat should be forced to pay some sort of fee to Kotkin for such "borrowing," right?

Here's the most telling passage: "... and, inevitably, the tendency toward political corruption. The Republicans have their mistresses, but the Democrats are dealing with a more serious array of scandals: the Blagojevich-Burris embarrassment in Illinois, Senator Christopher Dodd’s dubious mortgage dealings in Connecticut, the expansive graft case in New Jersey, and a slew of corruption investigations featuring Democratic congressmen.

Translation: "Democrats are more corrupt than Republicans, you see. It's simply inevitable. (Although we Republicans DO like to fuck, it's true! Hee hee hee ...)"

Uh, California does have a property tax. It's just limited by Prop. 13. Are you thinking of Florida, a reddish state that's in deep poo poo right now?

@Nic Fit: Prop 13 crippled California and continues to do so. Thank Howard Jarvis for gutting the most illustrious, and practically free for residents, university system in the world. Sad. California and Florida shouldn't be in the same 'graph.

@Mediahohoho: When you buy a house in California, your annual property taxes are 1% of the purchase price (with small increases each year). My understanding is that the 1% figure is actually fairly high in comparison with most states.

Whenever I visit the red home state of my honey I am struck by the number of boarded up businesses and the thriving "pay day loan" (legal loansharking) establishments on every block.

Also, wondering if Texas would still like to secede, given the immense amount of water it is about to start receiving from its neighbors to the north.

Finally, thank you for adding "reasonable conservative" to my lexicon of oxymoronic phrases. It's right there with jumbo shrimp and military intelligence.

I would happily take that child off the state's hands, give him a real good Old Testament-style name, and raise him up right. He looks like an angel.

Also, oddly enough, that kid looks like Heath Ledger's daughter, sort of. Is is only me that sees it? Poor Matilda.

I know someone who had problems with the NJ authorities. His daughter made a comment to her kindergarten teacher that was reported to the guy's ex-wife, who is, not to put too fine a point on it, a complete b--ch. The mother, without even asking her ex about it, called the authorities and this fellow had to get a lawyer to go into talk to them. He'd previously answered their questions, but they refused to tell him what his daughter had said and insisted he come in.

Fortunately, they realized that the little girl's remarks had been misinterpreted. But I was impressed that they did take it seriously.

Suggestion: Try to stay as far away as possible from co-workers with ugly divorce and custody issues. They will consume all the oxygen and make you consider suicide at the end of the day.
