    Sidebar for crowdsourcing:

Since a bunch of you seem to work for MTVN, maybe some of you know people who work for MSLO*? I just sent them a resume and I just want it not to go straight into the circular file.

*shut up, I have loved Martha Stewart since I was 7 years old.

MTV and VH1 could both save a lot of money if they just, oh I don't know, became music channels again.

The decreased spending and hiring freeze stuff has been going on for months now at all MTV networks. I know we were told months ago to watch expenses and keep travel to a minimum. And no new hires or temps are allowed until 09. Layoffs are likely, but I don't think a crisis is imminent, at least I haven't heard anything too scary about it.

On the upside, Sumner Redstone thinks this Midway company may be on to something with their new-fangled pinball machines.

I wonder if they'll get to cash in those vacation days if they get laid off before they're able to use them.

I got an email with "IMPORTANT" in the subject line this morning too. It was a link to a woman playing the kazoo with her vagina. Someone needs to school Bob on the meaning of "important."

@Private Hangnail: @Clare: I didn't share because it's much funnier to imagine than it was to watch. When you get an email from your mom that says "IMPORTANT" in the subject and only has "vagina kazoo" in the text, you get your hopes up. Sadly, the only thing this video would be good for is a McCain concession speech.

    But since you asked:

nope. they tried that with mtv2 and it doesn't work. mtv's demo eats up the hills and shit programming of that ilk. it's a sad fact, but a fact nonetheless.

    Bob then added this p.s.

By the by, Sumner will still be celebrating his 102nd this year with a ruby studded cake and more hot young model/7 diamond whores than one man could ever need. So if you're in the Hamptons, fuck off or we will release the rabid guard peacocks on you and your young family.

Great. MTV already treats its employees like complete trash. They must be pretty crafty if they're thinking of ways to make it even worse.

currently work for them and i feel like i'm treated pretty well. though this assessment is subject to change if the rumored layoffs materialize.

they had a well-deserved bad rep for their tendency to keep people employed full-time for years while categorizing them as "freelance," thus denying them the benefits that usually accompany many years of full-time work. but this was resolved, as a search of gawker's archives will demonstrate.

    @loosecanon:

Yes, I'd heard about that. Was fortunate to be a 'permanent' employee during my tenure there, but less so years back, working for another big media company. That company lost a huge class action lawsuit over its (ab)use of temps but I missed out on the resulting compensation for fear of jeopardizing my future status there. While I have very positive memories of MTVN I am beside myself with glee whenever I hear any negative news about Company #2.

@LilyBlue: I had a large group of friends who worked for VH1. They were routinely fired, then re-hired (for less pay), then fired and rehired (w/out benefits).

Entertainment jobs can be rough, but Viacom definitely has a record of not being the greatest employers. I've heard similar things about the Times.

Any entertainment companies that you know of have a record of being good employers? (No, Google is not an entertainment company.) Because some days this consulting thing gets kinda old...
