Ahhhh, you obviously don't follow Detroit sports, otherwise you would have gone with the more appropriate 0-16 Detroit Lions.

    Ah, The Dickensian Aspect.

Scott Templeton, gritty reporter from The Wire's fifth season who also got poignant quotes from homeless people would approve.

One of the points of the article, I think, was to highlight the unresponsiveness of 911 in Detroit. It's a serious and ongoing problem.

@bluebears: It's exactly why I moved out of the city after 35 years. My house was broken into for three years like it was an annual event.

I don't blame the cops or 911. They are completely outnumbered. Thanks again, Kwame!

Perhaps he was just trying to freeze himself during this bad economy and be revived later when the recession is over.

Of course, storing your block of ice OUTSIDE is probably a bad idea in this kind of endeavor.

Detroit is a really rough but interesting city. I haven't been there since the mid '90s, so maybe it's changed a lot, but D-town spends the night before Halloween burning shit down. That's pretty hardcore for the Midwest. [en.wikipedia.org]

Also, every night that I spent at my boyfriend's house in downtown Detroit back then, I was always awoken by the sound of glass breaking. I'd get up, peak out the window, make sure it wasn't my car, and go back to bed. It was pointless to call the cops.

Flying back from a recent trip to Detroit, I mentioned to the TSA person going through my stuff that security was far more rigorous than at JFK. And she snorted, "New York? Ha! This is Detroit, honey - we eat our young."

Also, Michigan has been having a bad run of people freezing on them. There's that very sad story about a 90 year old man in Bay City who froze to death in his house after the electric company reduced his service due to arrears... IN WINTER.

@BadUncle: There are laws in place to stop two particularly large utilities in Michigan from shutting off electricity/gas during the winter. There are also special accomodations concerning elderly and low-income utility customers that protect them from this.

However, Bay City has a municipally-owned utility company and is not restricted by those policies that would normally stop this from happening. That story was national news, and a lot of people are PISSED. Action will be taken, I'm sure.

Note that the man-sicle was found at the bottom of an elevator shaft. Also note that this building is notorious as a haven for local metal scrappers. They're going in and out of there every day, carrying out large pieces of scrap as if they're movers.

This man was most likely a scrapper who fell down the shaft and was knocked unconscious. Considering the 'locals' within the building are more concerned with keeping themselves alive, they obviously had more pressing matters on their minds.

By the way, I live two blocks from this building.
