In reply to ALM Should Be Ashamed of Its Bathrooms
Went to their site, read their core values [www.alm.com] , nothing about clean bathrooms. So give them a break.

At one media company where I worked, each men's room stall had a magazine rack. Classy! Also, do women do this stuff? #media

@TheBusinessGuy: Women prefer to perpetuate the myth that we don't actually use the bathroom for anything other than powdering our noses or gossiping. So when we actually have to use the bathroom, it involves an intricate system of determining whether anyone else is in there, speedloading and in the event someone else comes in- not meeting each other's eyes, flushing five or six times and rushing out. #media

In reply to New York Times Co. Doesn't 'Need' to Sell Boston Globe. But Will Anyhow.
Watching the New York Times wax coquettish on their worse-than-worthless non-core assets is like watching Courtney Love trying to sleaze her way into some free heroin. The Globe has an impossible labor situation and no future. Only an oligarch would even be remotely interested, and even then it would be a rather expensive, second-rate vanity to maintain.

@Unsolicited Advice: You really think the Globe has no future? I mean, I know people here don't like newspapers, but that seems a bit extreme.

I know that the internet longs to be free and whatnot, but the Globe is considering going to some type of pay system, as are the Murdoch properties, the San Fran Chronicle is experimenting with differentiated content and the NYTimes has polled about tiers.

Say what you will and their have been cost cuts across the board, it's been a tight advertising market, but my impression is that the papers who have never been free haven't been complaining as loudly, as those who've subscribed to the "eyeballs" mentality.

I just hope that when the big papers settle on a system, it'll be justifiable for a non-hard product and affordable for all types of readers. But unless everybody starts clicking on ads and disabling their ad-block software, the publishers aren't going to have much choice.

The Globe is top heavy with columnists. Aside from the always useful "Handy Man on Call" (Peter Hotton), I can't think of a single person writing there who would make me pay for their website.
The Globe will be bought for its real estate. It's already dead. Now we just need to watch the burial.
