@Silverbackne: I'm going to go out on a limb and say no. Or at least not hairy to the point that it's disgusting. But then again I'm okay with a little leg stubble too, so I may not be the best person to comment.
I've never understood why people think that diamonds are a good investment. They aren't. Have you ever tried to resell your old diamond jewlry? You'll only get a fraction of what you paid originally. They plummet in value. The fact that they are not only a good investment but rare and valuable is a giant lie concocted by the diamond industry in the first place.
@jjason82: They think that because jewelers tell them that. And once they understand those 4C's and have the pamphlet all memorized and have taken out more credit than they can imagine to buy them, they have to believe that they are a good investment or they would feel like fools.
@Tart of Darkness: THANK YOU. I made an offhand comment in front of my married friend, without thinking, about how I don't like diamonds and would never want one if I got married. She immediately got offended and went into a smug diatribe about how it represents their future because it's such a big responsible investment, blablahblah. You know, something a loser single who drinks juice out of a bowl like myself would never understand.
Anyway, I tried asking her how exactly this is a smart investment and she basically just quoted whatever bullshit the diamond company told them. Sigh.
Diamonds have little RESALE value, which makes them a very bad investment.
Sooner or later, people are going to realize that synthetic diamonds are quickly becoming indistinguishable from natural diamonds, and then the game will really be up. You can't wear your "Certificate of Authenticity" around town, now can you?
maybe if de beers would price appropiately then people might be interested. instead diamonds are among the most overvalued mined subatances on earth. a ruuby is far more rare than a diamond and yet diamonds are more treaured because de beers locks up 80% of their stock for decades before selling.
dude, they totally lock up the deodorant in my local CVS, no lie. that and razors. condoms are unlocked, but you have to turn this big weird dial that makes a long, loud cranking noise, so that everyone within 3 aisles knows you've chosen the extra sensitive lubricateds or whatever.
Working in the internet jewelry business, our sales increased quite a bit over last year. HOWEVER, we are also selling at low margins, which many jewelry stores do not.
Lesson, diamonds, like anything, will sell, but you can't price them to the high heavens.
@enriquez the water bottle: I was driving around a friend who was car shopping. I told one salesman something like "Even I [who wasn't in the market for a new car] would buy it at some price. $10k for a new Porsche? Show me where to sign."
@sample032: @Tart of Darkness: Well, there's always costs you need to cover before you make money, so maybe a $10K Porsche ain't happening.
But, I do hear from customers that go into jewelry stores with our costs, and are told that "there's NO way [we] can sell diamonds at that price." But we do. This is why diamond stores can have "70% OFF!!" sales. Their margins are huge.
@enriquez the water bottle: But something that offsets your overhead is better than nothing that offsets your overhead, right? Or was my econ prof lying to me?
