    @Foster Kamer: The Texas Observer has been a fully functioning non-profit from the beginning......not a daily, but definitely journalism.

    I actually think non-profit is a good thing because they are not necessarily going to be beholden to advertisers. Although, board members can sometimes affect the path of the organization. For good or bad.

    I know of several independent investigative journalists that have their own 501 (c)3 set up now. I am not sure how that is working for them, but I still see their websites up, so it must make a difference in these troubling times.
