I have no idea if she was wearing a helmet, or if it would have helped her if she wasn't, but this is still a probably a good time to think, if you bike without a helmet, about how dangerous it is. Wear a helmet. No matter how amazing of a rider you are or how much your hipster friends will give you shit for it, just wear a helmet.
A girl was killed in D.C. fairly recently in a similar scenario -- a garbage truck made a right turn into her -- and it is one of the most dangerous positions to be in on a bike. Cars and trucks aren't used to looking for anything but pedestrians in the crosswalk when they make a right turn (or even a one way to one way left turn). If you're not in front, then get behind. Ride safe, everyone.
@lostarchitect: I rock my Specialized helmet at all times. If you don't want to look like a dork they make cute "hipster" ones now but whatever, wear one. And you must be defensive especially when there is a right turn possibility. I always assume someone will just turn in front of me because, more often than not, they will.
Actually, Hamilton, I'm thinking keep an eye on this one. Greenpoint was one of the areas with the erasing of the bike lanes. I wouldn't be surprised to see some lawsuits come out of this is this was the case.
I also wouldn't be surprised if it would be the City who would be absorbing any payout and not those within the community who was pushing for the erasing in the first place. NY Politics is really infuriating.
@Hamilton Nolan: McGuinness is an insane road to even drive on. I always made a note to myself to never bike on it. I'm not sure if she was more on Nassau or McGuinness, but a lot of those Greenpoint streets are tight and traffic aggressive. It sucks and I'll be dusting off my long neglected helmet...
@The Real JR: There is not...and it's a fairly narrow street and has been the site of other cyclist accidents before. People drive too fast towards McGuinness and the BQE entrance. and McGuinness has also had more than one bicyclist fatality in the past few years.
So yeah, maybe we should ask those dead people how they feel about bike lanes?
I'm only in favor of a "put them in the condos" plan if they tear down these low-income eyesores. These buildings are so poorly-built, and depressing -- the sooner we replace them with more energy-efficient structures that are better lit and safer, the better.
@meechybee: The one thing that jars me about Chelsea, is that smack dab in the gallery district are tons of public housing structures like the ones pictured. I'd be all for the modernization of these buildings or complete tearing down of them.
So where do the poor people live while they do renovations? I mean, they can't expect them to go to their summer homes in the Hamptons- not at this time of year.
Two things: Sienna Miller's dog is the ugliest thing I have ever seen, and whatever that hangliding/papoose attachment is that the Schreiber-Watts' have for their larger child is awesome.
Also those Lindsay photos make me want to get a second hand weave. So three things. #siennamiller
@ms_priestypants: That dog is the best thing about the photos. It looks like a mutt from the pound, not a frou-frou breed that yip all the time. It looks like he likes being fed peanut butter on hot dog slices rather than those rigor mortis Beggin Strips. It looks like his name is "Louie" instead of "Princess."
If I didn't already have a spoiled cat, Sienna Miller's dog Louie is the kind of dog I'd get. #siennamiller
Don't get me wrong, the only thing that could make me want that dog more than the weave is if it was missing a leg or two. when I lived in NY I actually tried to adopt a dog that looked like a cross between Louie, a Chinese crested, and a gargoyle, who had been rescued from a puppy mill where he was only fed popcorn, but someone else beat me to him.
