While it doesn't exactly disabuse of the belief that Barack will restore some dignity to the presidency, I gotta say that the whole official line of branded merch they're peddling is fairly offensive to my not particularly delicate sensibilities.

@Moff: True, but it may be speaking to mainstream America in a language that it can understand. If you can take a minute to treasure your friends as directed by your Precious Moments figurine, you can do your part for your country upon reminder by your Obama nightlight. ("Use CFL bulbs," it almost cries.) The mass merch angle may allow civic responsibility to rejoin the mainstream consciousness. I realize that is idealistic, but it would be nice to see government (and consequently civic-mindedness) brought more commonly into collective thought outside of its use the butt of bureaucracy jokes.

The best part of that commemorative plate commercial is when the guy is sitting at his desk, looks to the plate, smiles then nods that sort of "G-d DAMN that is one fine looking plate and I am one smart dude for buying it." The clip is so awesome they put it in the commercial twice
