Nobody is quite sure why; this is simply a custom of the Internet. So Brad Troemel made a video montage of cam girls reciting their MySpace ID numbers to testify their real-ness. (That's something they have to do anyway to prove their identity to the MySpace community managers.) The combined effect of the video is eerie and probably arousing.

"WHEN SOMEONE IS SO POPULAR ON MYSPACE THEY HAVE FAKE PROFILE MADE ABOUT THEM, THE REAL PERSON MAKES A "PROOF" BY TAPING THEIR NAME AND MYSPACE ID NUMBER AND SENDING IT TO MYSPACE AUTHORITIES."

<![CDATA[The Silent Staring Japanese Girl Is Ugly, Not Japanese]]> Well ugly is such a harsh word, so judge for yourself in the videos below: first, one of the videos I talked about from the silent (but occasionally Japanese-speaking) cute camgirl known as Magibon. Then a clip of her on a Japanese talk show, where she needed an English translator. Without the flattering bird's eye angle of her webcam, her face is long and plain; her teeth are terribly crooked. There's more information in this juvenile wiki article.

Cute Magibon:

Not as cute Magibon:

She's reportedly 21 and from Florida; anyone who can translate, please do in the comments.

<![CDATA[Being A Camgirl Now Takes 40 Seconds Of Staring At The Camera]]> Time was, a camgirl had to turn on a 24-hour webcam to get some attention and maybe some gifts from her Amazon wishlist. Now this adorable little Japanese-American (or white girl who speaks fluent Japanese?) girl (woman? She lists herself as 21) named MRirian gets hundreds of thousands of viewers for each of her one-minute YouTube videos. Sometimes she speaks in Japanese, sometimes she even moves around, but mostly she just stares at the camera with her cute-overload face. Like so:

The video above got over 615,000 views since MRirian, or Magi, posted it on Sunday. Forty seconds of staring and a hand-wave. Granted, she's adorable as a basket of pugs, but since YouTube only registers viewers who stick around for more than a couple of seconds, that means people are seeing one video, watching all the way through while nothing happens, and clicking another video to do it again.

It's not a Japanese fan club; the comments on her silent and conversational videos are all in English, and most revolve around the theme of "I wanna bang her." But YouTube's ad program doesn't care, and Magi (who further exploits her cuteness at her Yahoo blog) has enough viewers to theoretically make a living as a YouTube partner as history's laziest camgirl.
