gawd, you guys are so dense. this is a brilliant cartoon.
the message here is that obama used the race card in nominating sotomayor. notice that none of the republicans is using the stick (honest debate will be perceived as striking a hispanic woman/pinata with racism/a stick) to strike the pinata, because none of them will because she's hispanic. it turns conventional wisdom about which party is racist on its head, and it may very well be correct because, yeah, the debate will, in the end, be very light.
does she deserve to be confirmed? absolutely. will the debate on her merits ever prove that? absolutely not. republicans will not risk alienating the hispanic vote and the public's ire by beating up on a pinata.
@spotted-dog: Yes, but by depicting Obama's "race card pulling" by conflating Newyorquen~os with Mexicans is racist. Bok couldn't figure out how to depict Obama's race-card-pulling any other way than tossing a sombrero on his head, because Bok is a fucking uncreative idiot that knows his readership doesn't distinguish between Boricuas and Mexicans. Which is true. In Oklahoma a Puerto Rican would be considered Mexican because Oklahoma is a big red state filled with white social conservatives that never go anywhere and don't know anything about Hispanic identity. (Except, of course, for the 10% of the OKC population that is in fact Mexican, but The Oklahoman doens't write to that readership.) Racist or ignorant, it's not good either way.
If there's no marzipan or bodega lychee candy in that piƱata, than I call a fake. Everybody knows you gotta have the racist candy to make it all work.
@Spirit Fingers: I grew up sucking tamarindo paste from a package that looked like a Fisher Price syringe -- so I am offended by your racist candy remark!
Christ you people are IDIOTS.
This is not racist.
Here is how you numbskulls read the cartoon:
Cartoonist shows Hispanic woman characterised as pinata = Racist. Stop any further thought or reflection.
Here is how thinking people read the cartoon:
Obama smugly daring the republicans to publically come out and show their stripes in front of the cameras, daring them to blather on about La Raza and all the other bullshit stereotypical stuff (SYMBOLIZED as a Soto Pinata) associated with Mexican Americans.
BTW, I am Mexican American, I take ZERO offense to this.
And an note to all you gentle readers.... Bad taste does not automatically equal racism.
I swear "Racist" is the least understood but most overused word is the English language.
@VanessaAkon: i love people who give this kind of mental autonomy to grown men who make their careers out of drawing ridiculous charicatures of people they are barely even familiar with, for print publication, in dying newspapers. it is sweet.
@VanessaAkon: HINT: Sotomayor isn't Mexican, but to the eyes of fat angry white people in the federal welfare state of Oklahoma: if it looks like a beaner . . .
@gawkimo: But... I think that's the point? Isn't the implication that Republicans are conflating Mexican stereotypes with Puerto Ricans? Hence, the sombrero and the pinata?
I'm not defending the quality of the cartoon- it obviously isn't very clear. But I THINK it's actually poking fun at racism, and not using racism to be funny.
@Niko Bellic: Racism: To believe one race superior to another. Where the fuck does this cartoon do that? Really, learn english and apply the proper term.
@BonMorte: You know what? Talk to Parenee, bitch. He called it racist first in those big bold words at the top. I'm not paid to explain cartoons to every damn fool that Gawker allowed to register.
@T.S._delegate: One problem is that Sotopmayor isn't depicted as a pin~ata. It's juts her, hanging from a rope. BTW: you aren't going to win any points indicating that The Oklahoman is actually running a liberal cartoon. Have you read their fucking editorials?
@gawkimo: No, I haven't. I was just guessing at what it might mean. It's entirely possible that I'm wrong. But it seemed like there was a possibility, at least, that the cartoonist isn't a blatant racist.
Years ago, Columbia Journalism Review ran a multi-part series on why The Daily Oklahoman was the worst newspaper in America. Looks like things haven't changed.
Also, I think it's actually in Idaho. Or one of those other square states.
Is it that people whose awareness of Hispanic culture begins and ends at the Chi-Chi's in the local mall can't come up with anything but piƱatas and sombreros, or do they truly believe Ms. Sotomayor is Mexican? Like "Obama is really a Senagalese Muslim"?
Honestly, I don't think that's as bad as Delonas. Delonas was saying "black people are monkeys," whereas this could be read as a lampoon of Republicans who are using coded racial language, and who kind of view her as a piƱata, in the sense that they are about to start swinging at her. Does it use a clumsy ethnic stereotype? Yeah. Is it worse than Delonas? No way.
@Dave J.: Except, of course, the cartoonist failed to draw Sotomayor as a piƱata. You see, for the metaphor to work, she should be depicted as a . . . oh, never mind. You're right: this is what passes for a progressive point of view in AMERICA'S WORST NEWSPAPER:
I had no idea the ranks of our military veterans included such skilled purveyors of snark. My appreciation for our men and women in uniform has now increased tenfold.
There's an awesome article about Weinstein v. the religious nutjobs in the military in Harper's Magazine. Thank the dinosaurs that someone is fighting the "earth is 5,ooo y.o. nutjobs, iraq war is taking jesus to the heathens" freaks.
