As if being unfunny has ever been a problem for Lorne Micheaels. At some point the SNL players stopped seeing themselves as irreverent jesters and started seeing themselves as America's trusted political advisers, who also happened to be rabidly democrat. Pravda political satire. Funny as a migraine.
Making sure everyone knows it's been a really long time since you watched SNL: almost as original (and fascinating!) as telling everyone you know that you don't own a television.
@Novaload: Go look up the PBS special on the Second City in Chicago. Tina Fey has changed a lot. I mean, so much so that when it came time to get rid of someone on 30 Rock who gets kicked to the curb? Her friend Rachel Dratch who was replaced with the more "telegenic" Jane Krakowski.
Folks, comedy is not pretty if you’re a lady and not traditionally pretty.
@pssshwhatever: I think she's absolutely smoking, to the point where I would watch her do almost anything -- short of appearing on that awful Trump show, perhaps (is that still on?).
Clearly I understand nothing about the television industry.
@jasonelias: Ditto - she is (was) the hottest girl on the show.
They need a fat girl on the show! (Bigger than Casey, she's simply curvy.) This whole "we'll just put the fat guy in a dress - it makes fun of fat girls implicitly and a guy in a dress is always funny!" shit always pissed me off.
@johnny_carsick: Three words for you: Big Girls Blouse. That show can be seen on IFC and it's from the freakin nineties, for gossake, and it's still hilarious.
She obviously didn't fit into Lorne's brilliant comic casting: ya got the fat guy, the black guy, the goofy ironic guy, the adorable girl, the serious but pretty girl...Just plug in the (mostly) interchangeable parts as needed over 34 years and voila! Comedy!
Wilson may not be funny and that's why she was fired. However its well documented that Michaels wouldn't let Tina Fey, who wasn't fat after a diet, on camera until she lost more weight. Few people would deny that Fey is funny and talented(her humor might not be everyone's taste). So it's easy to see why a rumor would start that weight was the reason.
@CoffeeAtDawn: Yeah, Vanity Fair article but also, if you read any of early Fey profiles from when she transitioned from writer to on air, she brings it up. She was incredibly self conscious transitioning to on camera and a lot of it seemed to be brought on my Lorn Michaels. Also, Liz Lemmings is also harping on her weight, which is never a problem, and I've always thought this aspect of her character was drawn from the real life experience of Fey.
For the record, Fey topped out at an obese size 6-8 at her heaviest.
It's hard to imagine anyone being fired from SNL for being unfunny with Horatio Ganz, Fred Armisten and the rest of the spectacularly unfunny crew gainfully employed there.

I also can't remember a female cast member being even slightly overweight. Plenty of guys, but no women.

the mind reels at the number of sketch comedy shows that have been running circles around that sinking ship since, oh, the mid 90s.
keep digging, Lorne, we can still see you!

or maybe i'm just bitter that "mr. show" and "kids in the hall" have bitten the dust while this shitshow rages on.
