Marvel at his father's family-destroying schemes! And, his secret for attracting Ivanka Trump, below!

Gabriel Sherman has a huge profile of Jared Kushner in New York magazine today, with a hefty section devoted to his father's little "Set up my brother-in-law with a hooker and secretly tape it and send the video to his family" episode, which landed him in jail. But let's start with Jared's high praise for the Observer, the paper that's been wracked by layoffs and budget cuts under his leadership:

"I found the paper unbearable to read, it was like homework," Jared tells me.

Haha. But Jared is changing that! With his powers of motivation. After he hired PR man Bob Sommer as President of the Observer, he told him, " We called it Weekend at Bernie's, because it was like dead people walking around." Good one! After the NYO's longtime editor Peter Kaplan left and severe layoffs hit the paper, Jared put it to his underpaid, beleaguered journalists straight:

At a meeting last month, Jared told his staff that the Observer needed to move on. "Kaplan is a classy guy, but he's old-school," Jared said. "If we were doing our jobs right, Gawker wouldn't have a reason to exist. Curbed wouldn't have a reason to exist.
"Every Observer writer wants to be a novelist," he went on. "But we need to be deliberate about when we are short and when we are long."

Jared, you are our reason to exist. And your writers don't want to be novelists; they have to, because you laid them off. But Jared's not the type to buy into the doom and gloom; he 's optimistic about the dying newspaper industry to a comical extent. Let's hope he's just lying to put on a happy face:

"I think we're definitely at a bottom for newspapers," he said a couple of weeks later. "Once this Russian winter is over, once the papers fail that should fail, you'll see a resurgence. I think the Observer two years from now will be a very viable entity."

He also promised to run the NYO as a "profit-making entity," which would be a pretty historic moment! Jared seems like not a terrible guy, though, considering the way he grew up—favorite son of a mogul father, who hired a PI to set up his brother-in-law, who he hated, with a hooker, and then had to be talked out of sending the video of the incident to his brother-in-law's children. Jared does not seem to be that cut throat, at least. His dad made huge donations to Harvard and then to NYU to smooth Jared's admission to those august institutions. And it's paid off; the swaggering underclassman has blossomed into a total heart throb. Ivanka Trump found his pimp game irresistible. Their steamy secret of attraction:

"Jared and I are very similar in that we're very ambitious," Ivanka tells me one morning in her office on the 25th floor of the Trump Tower. "That's what makes it so amazing to be in a relationship with someone who is supportive of that. I'm happy for him when he is in the office working late. I know how good that feels when you sit down and return e-mails."

We're fanning ourselves rapidly! Jared Kushner's made some mistakes, sure. He may not be able to run a newspaper very well (who can, these days?), but he's great material. As long as you don't work for him.

<![CDATA[Observer At Center Of Exciting Criminal Conspiracy, Maybe!]]> Did you know the Observer is subsidized by an illicit slush fund? It shamefully is, according to a lawsuit filed by the former president of one of the Kushner Companies. When developer Charles Kushner bought a $1.8 billion office tower, he routed $18 million back to himself as commission on the mortgage, then allegedly siphoned $5 million off that for son Jared's cash-bleeding weekly newspaper.

Just think: Kushner's investors thought their money was tucked securely into the rock-solid real estate market when really a tiny sliver of it was being sacrificed in a media bonfire so the Observer could investigate exactly why and how Park Slope moms would like to fuck Don Draper.

If that's somehow "wrong" in this topsy-turvy world then we don't want to be right. Honestly, the money probably fell out of Charles' pockets during a walk through the offices or something. When you buy a building numbered "666 5th Street," strange things are bound to happen!

<![CDATA[Charles Kushner: God Will Not Forgive My Sister For Putting Me In Jail]]> daddy kushnerApparently Yahweh has forgiven Charles Kushner—real estate magnate, recently released felon, and Observer publisher Jared's father—for the whole "getting his brother-in-law a prostitute, filming their encounter, and sending the tape to his sister" blackmail thing. But, according to Charles, He has not forgiven his sister for ratting on Charles to the Feds. Or, in Charles' words: "For instigating a criminal investigation and being cheerleaders for the government and putting their brother in jail because of jealousy, hatred and spite." God did not return multiple phone calls and an email before press time.

New York Observer publisher and Ivanka Trump-lover Jared Kushner's dad Charles, who sponsored the work visa for then-Jersey gov Jim McGreevey's supposed Israeli lover-employee, has now hired his buddy McGreevey's new boyfriend to be the Kushner family corporation's chief investment officer! <![CDATA[Jared Kushner Gets The Trump Seal Of Approval!]]> On the Howard Stern show yesterday, Donald Trump noted that, according to a listener, his daughter "Ivanka was dating a 'very rich guy—not as rich as me, but a very rich guy' from a 'real estate family.'" Translation: That is basically a blessing from the goyim for New York Observer publisher Jared Kushner! ("Rich"="good.") Anyway, that's exactly the kind of Trumpism that we imagine gets the hackles up on Jared's daddy, New Jersey kingpin (and good pal of gay American Jim McGreevey) Charles Kushner. But hey, the real estate union of Jersey Jared and Manhattan Ivanka is good for everyone for now—just like an arranged marriage between little empires! Though we still don't think it's remotely possible that Jared will ever marry the shiksa. Prove us wrong, you adorable lovebirds! We want to believe.

<![CDATA['NYO': Meet The Big Fat Prosecutor Who Nailed Our Owner's Dad]]> So there's not much of a Senatorial race here in New York, what with Hilary Clinton looking pretty close to be the first candidate to ever receive more the one hundred percent of the vote. Across the river, however, it's a different matter: Sen. Bob Menendez is locked in a tough battle with Tom Kean, Jr., a state senator and son of a popular former governor. What's making the race unusually tight is the sense that Menendez, is, well, sort of dirty in the way that pretty much all Jersey politicians are. Fuelling that perception is Chris Christie, a Bush-appointed U.S. Attorney who announced "an investigation—61 days before voters go to the polls—into a nonprofit agency connected to Mr. Menendez." Democrats are predictably apoplectic, charging Christie with political motives. But what sort of prosecutor is he? The Observer lists some of his recent targets:

He has now successfully gone after figures with Democratic ties, like the powerful former State Senator John Lynch and real-estate magnate Charles Kushner, as well as Republicans like former Essex County Executive James Treffinger, the G.O.P.'s top Senate prospect in 2002.

Wha? Charles Kushner? That monster? Okay, Christie's square with us: He put away a bad man.

<![CDATA[Charles Kushner Back at the Office?]]> charles%20kushner%20free.jpgCharles Kushnerconvicted tax evader, prostitute dispatcher, and father of new Observer owner Jared Kushner — was released from his New Jersey halfway house last week. He wasn't exactly serving hard time, of course. However, it turns out that Kushner was originally sent to a prison camp at Alabama's Maxwell Air Force Base, but in addition to time off for good behavior, Kushner got his sentence further reduced by completing an alcohol abuse program. This raised a few eyebrows among those that knew him, since his drinking problem was news to them. The emancipated Kushner decamped to his Long Branch mansion for the Labor Day weekend, and was supposedly set to return to work at his real estate company, Kushner Cos., as of yesterday — though it's unclear what he'll be doing there, since he stepped down as chairman before going to jail. Something tells us he'll be taking back the big chair and knocking back a few stiff drinks by Friday. If you spot Charlie in the office, let us know.

<![CDATA[Nobody Knows the Trouble Charles Kushner's Seen]]> So Charles Kushner, the disgraced real estate mogul and father of new Observer owner Jared Kushner, will be released from his halfway house this Saturday, where he's spent the past 100 days of his two-year prison sentence. Make no mistake, Kushner's still been serving hard time:

Like many well behaved white collar criminals, he only spends weekdays at the halfway house, but on weekends, he is free to frolic at his two-acre oceanfront estate in Long Branch, NJ. His mini-mansion is fashioned in a classic Spanish style complete with stucco walls and red roof.

Kushner's sentenced to live in a halfway house and the authorities only let him roam in his mini-mansion just two days per week? It's a wonder the poor thing can walk upright after such humiliation. This might be a record for cruel and unusual punishment.

<![CDATA[Charles Kushner to Walk This Saturday]]> We asked about the pending prison release of Charles Kushner, father of New York Observer owner Jared Kushner. A reader pointed us to the charming Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator, which tracked down Kushner p re with ease. Charles has a projected release date of Saturday, August 26. The reader explains:

He got 24 months? He gets 54 days off a year and gets to serve the last 10% of his time (the 100 or so days) in a halfway house, which is still under Bureau Of Prisons control. So he is free this month; no parole in the federal system, just a formula that works out for him like everybody else. He will have some period of Supervised Release which will be monitored by the Probation Office.
And there you have it. (We also want to congratulate the BOP for that sweet mob o' prisoners graphic in the upper right.)

<![CDATA[Kushner Sr. to Walk Free Soon?]]> charles%20kushner%20free.jpgYou might recall that developer and Democratic bagman Charles Kushner, father of new New York Observer owner Jared Kushner, was sentenced to two years' incarceration for "18 counts of tax evasion, witness tampering and illegal campaign donations," not to mention hiring a hooker to seduce his brother-in-law, thus punishing Kushner's sister for cooperating with investigators. However, our crowded penal system can only hold so many billionaires, so Kushner the elder has been living at a Newark halfway house, with an expected release in "late August." If Charles Kushner does indeed walk early (we're assuming he's getting parole, time served, etc. — heard anything?), we hope he gets a column at the Observer. He could tell us about life on the inside, and all the twisted schemes he had to create just for survival's sake. Just like in Prison Break, only with work release and movie night.
