Mr. Siebert said that he unwittingly incorporated some of the phrasing from the e-mail message that he had been sent earlier.

will prevent people from going to law school, graduating college etc. But when our big name "journalists" like the dumbass above do it...oops, sorry! No bigs!

All is folklore these days. Every story put online is a folk tale liable to elaboration in retelling. Unless it's really over the top, there's no such thing as cut-and-paste crime.

MoDo got away with murder there, in the Study with a Candlestick. But yes, mistakes do happen, non-fiction writers dealing with tons of notes and quotes do mess up, fail to attribute, forget who said what. It's not always "stealing", and though it's a professional lapse, not always unforgiveable, it happens.

(I wrote a bit more about this, mentioning Doris Kearns Goodwin, but when I was editing it the screen blinked and I had lost everything I wrote. I'll try to keep it snappy, there's a 5 minute limit on composition apparently. Which is all right.)

Originally, when the editor approached Dowd privately, she burst into tears and said, "Honestly, officer. I had no idea I was speeding!" Siebert just shut up and agreed to pay the ticket.

Another key difference is that Siebert's piece was thousand's of words long (and fascinating by the way), so it's a bit more understandable when something like this makes print uncaught.

Ugh, I just imagined this story in the style of a Maureen Dowd column: a witty play with two characters, the innocent whale and a cynical, cigar-smoking, baby-seal clubbing Dick Cheney. At the end of the play, the whale dies, used as a metaphor to represent the death of freedom during the Bush administration, but it's ok because Obama dressed as Jack Sparrow swings in to save the day. Then everyone goes out for tea.

Maybe it's just because I read the times on my phone in the grim morning, but I feel as though that is literally the dreck that Maureen Dowd is allowed to produce and publish.

Here's the difference, as far as I can tell:

Siebert incorporated someone else's content unwittingly.

Dowd did so unwittily (as she does everything).

So I guess unwitty plaigiarism is OK, while the unwitting variety is not.
