Southerners don't like this either. We've been rooting it out for a long time. Because of the prejudices it arouses, we are even more sensitive to such accusations, actually.
No matter where you live in the world, there will be those who tell you one group or another deserves unfair treatment, or is in some way inferior. In fact, if you live in the Northeast, there are those who will tell you that Southerners are inferior. Can you imagine someone actually writing or saying that?
What a benighted condition they must exist in...

And in the interests of full disclosure, which i think is how the chattering class gets around conflicts of interest that might otherwise shut it up, i haven't lived in the south since 1998. It was rural coastal Florida, but i also spent time in Gainesville. G'ville thinks of itself as the Berkeley of the South, a laughable notion on many levels. But even then and there, G'ville had a very stark white-black divide, and there were virtually no Asians at the University of Florida until right before i graduated. It's possible things have changed in the urban south in the last decade, and it may be far easier to be a middle class GWM in Metro Atlanta than a poor black.
But having observed the military in Savannah, i'm not sure it leavens all that much. Racism, sure. But homophobia (my hot-button issue)? Not so much. Interestingly enough, however, my Georgia raised, South Carolina born father-in-law preferred by husband to bring home a white man over a black woman.
But as for as the GOP being a Southern problem? McCain won in the Bible Belt, the under-populated square states, and Appalachia. The GOP is essentially irrelevant in California, and looking to stay that way for the foreseeable future.

I wish I would have said something to her, but I was rendered speechless at the moment (and the lady was holding scissors to my hair).

For what it's worth, i think you were right to hold your tongue--hair-stylists have a fearsome power.

If there's ever a place that suffers from "Confederate envy" (yes, Southerners, that feeling is your head starting to spin), it's the Pennsyltuckey part of the Keystone State. Some sociologist could write a book about it.

And...uh, aren't you from the Crumbled Empire? I married into a southern family. Trust me, your accents are way sexier.
