Ugh. Is it wrong that I'm actually vaguely impressed by the guy for actually having the nuts to divorce his wife instead of continuing to pull a Spitzer/Sanford double-life move? How low my standards for these people have sunk.

Jeff Sharlet, who wrote the book on "The Family" in 2008, was on Maddow again last night.

The craziest part was his statement that the members of the self-described "Christian mafia" didn't believe that the concept of "morals" applied to them, but was only necessary to keep everyone else in line.

@lil red: Yes, the doctrine of The Family has a special interpretation of the King David story (see one Sanford's weird press conferences). That a powerful man is entitled/obligated to take any woman he wants and kill her husband if he gets in the way. They kind of ignore that David's son was killed by God as punishment. I wonder how Sanford's sons feel about it.

@Erie: They are not following any conventional interpretation of the King David story. Some of the members may publicly repent, but the doctrine of The Family justifies the sin by their chosen. If Ensign killed his mistress's husband, instead of a payoff, he would still be "good" with The Family.
