True story: I picked up a call one night about 20 years ago that was meant for my roommate the doctor. It was a well-known C-grade actress who we can now view on a sitcom or two. She stated, approximately: "Your friend the lawyer and I hit it off at a party and we went to his hotel. We had sex, but he didn't pull out! We were going to have sex again, but my boyfriend started pounding on the door. I don't know how he found us! So your friend is passed out now and I need the morning after pill. Can you get me the morning after pill? I know it's not legal yet, but I know you can get one. I don't know what to do. I can't leave because he' s out there and he's going to kill us. Can you? Can you help me?"

I couldn't, but I did suggest that she douche with coca-cola. She gushed, "thank you, thank you, thank you" through her tears and hung up.

To assuage my hunger (heh heh) for disastrous kitchen adventures (and since I don't want to watch Top Chef reruns) BBC america is airing some eps of Kitchen Nightmares. For those unfamiliar, and with the higher channels, the show is fantastic

That person talking about the refrigerator is either the assistant to an EIC and talking about his or her personal refrigerator, or started at CNP in the mid-nineties.
From what I have been told from people in the building (I freelance and work at home), the cost-cutting is going to be way more on the operational/manufacturing/business side.
That said, I think ye olde fat contributing editor contract is going to be phased out at most mags.

I worked at conde nast for 15 years and Graydon and Anna frequented the cafeteria, mostly when it was brand new and other times when meeting with Si at his usual table (banquette to the right as soon as you enter the dinning room. It was hidden by one of Ghery's blue titanium blue waves). Anna even had lunch with the Prada women one time right in the middle of the fishbowl part of the dinning room.
I also went thru the last McKinsey visit where the water was taken away, and food at the salesmeetings, but all the people did on the business side did was put it on their T&E and said it was for a client meeting.
So don't feel sorry for the Nasties they know how to work the system.
McKinsey should actually look at the T&E, that is where the BIGGEST waste of money is!

I naively agreed to be an "off-the-street" person for a fashion magazine piece. At the shoot, the editors and stylists and assistants ordered lattes and lox omelets and sat around looking at YouTube videos on their MacBooks. If I were a McKinsey consultant, my head would have exploded.

And PS: At my last-before-last staffed jobbie at nat'l mag owned by corporate overlords, the CEO got on the horn and issued a decree to all the print properties that henceforth "consumption of alcoholic beverages shall no longer be expensed at business lunches or dinners." At which our EIC, who's not only one of the most brilliant editors on this planet but a majorly funny person, gathered the lot of us in an editorial meeting and noted, "You can no longer expense your boozing at lunch or dinner. Luckily, you can still do it at breakfast."
