He has a sort of Victorian prudishness that, if he were honest about his sexuality, would be kinda charming. Since he cannot get out there and be a big old fag and be happy and proud in the company of other righteous gay men, that 1940s thing he is working is more a sad prison than a swingin' style. He is trapped in another, pre-Stonewall era. And not living in your own time always winds up reading as kind of pathetic.

A straight man would never say "I go to straight bars, I go to gay bars." Straight women might say that. And, yes, I have been a couple of gay bars here in New York (hi, Nick!), but you just don't say it that way.
Drudge's life in the closet relates less to gayness than to the peculiar nature of the right wing in America. In most European coutries, if you're on the right and gay, you have dinner parties with your lover and go to Capri for the summer and no one cares.
In America, the conservative movement has always been connected with a certain type of Christianity. It's difficult to admit that you're gay -- and a Republican - because the Pat Robertson crowd will attack you.
Drudge become famous by being the "feeder" site for attacks on Clinton during the blow-job impeachment trial. May the Buddha show compassion for his pathetic life.

Not every conservative is against gay rights, just like not every liberal is for them. In addition, supporting gay rights does not make you gay. If that is the case then the gay rights movement is certainly in trouble, because even the most liberal estimates still place homosexuals in the minority.
I am a conservative who is pro gay rights, but would be angry if I was incorrectly outted. Not because I think being gay is shameful. I just don't want to ruin my chances with the ladies.

As far as obsessing over his sexuality -- that's a lose-lose situation since so many social conservatives are themselves closeted homosexuals. It's not like being gay and being liberal go hand in hand. When you accuse people of being in the closet, you garner sympathy for that person from other closet cases.

@gawkimo: I am certainly not saying that Drudge doesn't have a conservative agenda. He clearly does. Being that he is a conservative he will draw some from the anti-gay crowd that share his viewpoints in other areas. This happens to me with fellow conservatives. We will be chatting away nicely about fiscal policy or the Patriot Act and then someone will bring up an issue like Gay Marriage or Obscenity Laws and we start to disagree. It doesn't mean that I'm not a conservative (although I usually get lumped in with Reed and Pelosi by my counterpart at that point).
I never said that Drudge was unbiased. I think my point was that he was not going out of his way to fight on one side or the other of the gay rights front. He certainly doesn't deserve to have his sexual preference dissected to make a point.

Gays are fighting for basic civil rights, not just making intellectual points. Drudge certainly does deserve to have his sexuality made public. He chose to become a public figure and put himself at the center of policy debate when he made himself a player with a heavily biased and at times quite influential website, he can accept the consequences. He himself doesn't have a problem with trying to spread "dirt" about other people. And I doubt you are complaining on posts about relationship/sex gossip about other media players that it's inappropriate to post such stuff.

You're trying to make the point that anyone who promotes Republican ideals, is standing in the way of gay rights. It's a little more complicated than that. I am a Republican who will be the first to admit that not everyone one of the ideals of the party is good or right for America. However, there is no EVERYTHING THAT THE REPUBLICANS BELIEVE IN EXCEPT FOR THEIR ARCHAIC STANCE AGAINST GAYS AND VIEWS ON CREATIONISM PARTY. So, since gay rights are not the only thing with which I am concerned, I remain a Republican. If you draw the line in the sand and say that no Republicans can stand with you on gay rights, you will alienate many open minded conservatives. You might say good ridance, but its not as though every Democrat is on the same page either.
Finally, I don't really need for you to break the issue down for me. I get civil rights struggles. However, people arent going to die if they cant get married this year. I want them to have that right, but I'm concerned with war, terrorism and the US economy. As bad a job as Bush did with those things, I think that the Democrats are making it worse.

First, I specifically said "relationship/sex gossip about other media players" not outing. Have you been posting that it's wrong to post about straight media players' personal peccadilloes? If not, then I don't see how gay ones are different. Drudge would certainly be a hypocrite to complain, because he definitely does post items about the personal lives of people on his website.
I did not say anyone promoting Republicans ideals is necessarily putting down gay rights. However, becoming a media player and using your status and resources to try to get Republicans candidates elected has the effect of leading to gays being further oppressed. Also, since Drudge is heavily right wing and promoting the Republican party it will be assumed by everyone that he is against gay rights. If he does not stand up and state he is gay or say he is in favor of gay rights to try to at least slightly counter that impact and those assumptions then he is a force against gay advancement.
Drudge is NOT standing with anyone on gay rights. He is hiding on gay rights. If he was standing for gay rights, Republican or not, it would be a different thing.
Since you raised the matter of life or death, people are dying right now from the medical system the Republicans support. People are being shot in the enormous levels of gun violence the US has as a result of its comparably incredibly loose gun regulation. They are dying in Iraq where it never made sense for them to be. They are dying in Afghanistan where they have insufficient resources because Republican leadership has ignored Afghanistan in favor of Iraq. People are suffering from the incredibly polarization between the (tiny number of) American rich and the (large number of) American poor that is reinforced and perpetuated by Republican tax policies. Gay marriage isn't life or death, but it is another consideration.
