"Of particular interest to to the agent was a Green Party members' [sic] writings on 'marijuana reform, reparations, civil unions, repeal of the Patriot Act, and homosexual issues.'"
Uh oh. Next week, the FBI declares the state of California an unlawful enemy combatant.
Although, really, some perspective, Mr FBI: Teh Gays only have "issues" with mullets and subpar remixes of Lady GaGa.
Strange, the Greens usually plot to disarm the West's nukes so that the Heartland can be easy pickins for the Ruskies. Oh wait, I have to stop watching "Red Dawn" and "Amerika."
This is the same agency that, for the last eight years, has been ignoring every heavily-armed right wing extremist group inside the country, while vigorously pursuing environmental groups who have (thus far) only done property damage. Gee, I wonder why? Maybe it has something to do with our former asshat in chief?
@JacquesPaysan: They are not ignored, they are monitored intensively. The FBI has to monitor within the law, you understand, unless you'd like another Ruby Ridge scenario?
@BookishLookish: Eh, really? Why, then, was the ELF listed as the most dangerous domestic terrorist group, when they've never actually harmed a person, unlike, say, the Klan, etc?
And also, how come the gubmint gets all high and mighty about staying within the law when it comes to investigating the lunatic right wing fringe?
@JacquesPaysan: The Klan? Can we go for a ride in your new Coup de Ville, darling, 1963 really was a beautiful year.
OK, I'm editing. I am not trying to make fun of you, JP, you are one of my faves. But any group that can make bombs or stockpiles weaponry is watched. I don't know where you got that the ELF is the most dangerous. Jobs at the FBI are not politically appointed--well, not party-political appointed anyway, there's tons of politics in any bureaucracy, of course--and you'd be surprised at the political mix in there.
@BookishLookish: I'm surprised you didn't hear about this. The ELF thing was pretty big news back in 2006/ 2007, and (just as a means of illustrating) actually was deemed important enough to make a fairly long story-arc on SVU (I know, ick, but still).
@BookishLookish: i just want to interject here saying that a woman was murdered by the klan here in louisiana within the past year, so insinuations that worrying about the klan is some sort of retro idea is, sadly, not true.
@JacquesPaysan: Sure, have heard of them. The ELF and all terror-minded groups to the left (though they're so far left they're back around to right, IMO) are watched closely. But so are militia groups, hate groups, anti-tax rads, and the other right-wing groups large and small. They even still watch the FALN. Sorry to be so vague, JP, PM me if you want.
@BookishLookish: it's not a matter of "knowing the klan still exists". you made a snarky comment about the klan being passe, not a snarky comment that they didn't exist anymore. i merely thought that pointing out a current murder investigation might be helpful to anyone else who is not as familiar with current FBI monitoring of domestic terrorist groups as you obviously are, since, as as a podunk southerner, i get to wake up to headlines about the KKK on a semi-regular basis. and thanks for your even snarkier thanks about my comment! southern manners compel me to acknowledge the gesture.
John, this is kind of weak. Do you not understand how the FBI works? You should have contacted a senior research analyst in the D.C. office if you wanted something substantial. But then you wouldn't be able to make fun of some junior agent in Georgia, would you?
You guys... Ralph Nader hasn't been associated with the Green Party since 2004. How bout a pic of Cynthia McKinney? Much more likely to be a terrorist.
@HipHopopotamus: cynthia mckinney made me so embarrassed to be a "liberal" when i was studying political science at the university of georgia. i was horrified by her presidential nomination. such a bad idea for the greens.
@Iwillnotauditionforastar: I'm definitely on federal and Georgia state watch lists so if John keeps FOIAing, I'm sure he'll come across me at some point.
Hundreds of pages? Can you imagine how much paper various gumint organizations have stored all over this country? We should look into how much the landords are being paid to store the shit. Market rent? Hah! We've had computers and storage media since at least the 70's. Talk about environmental terrorism.
The dogs aren't trained to bark when they "sense" drugs or illegal material. Anyone that's been asked to have a vehicle searched by Border Patrol or Customs know better than to deny a car search, especially if you know there is nothing to hide.
What a jackass. What is the BFD if someone wants to check out your car, unless you have something to hide? Not saying it is constitutional, I'll leave that to others.
If it gets to the point that you've been tased, you probably are an asshole.
The fact is that he was asserting his legal right to not be searched without a warrant. It's in the Constitution, a little thing called the fourth amendment.
And yeah, I also think bashing a guys head until he needs 11 stitches just because he asserted his legal rights is a bit excessive. Even if he is an annoying Republican preacher.
"Anti-terrorism checkpoint?" The Border Patrol set up those checkpoints between San Diego and Phoenix years ago, because the area is a major crossing point for illegal aliens.
