At some point the hearse carrying his casket is going to have to make it through the crowds around the Staples Center perimeter. Crush injuries, anyone?
* There will be a Children Drop Off center at the back of the Nokia Theater for all members of the media who brought their children to work today. The Nokia Theater takes no responsibility if the child is left unattended
P.S. The back of the theater where the Children Center is, is also where Jacksons body will enter and exit the theater. Again, we are not responsible.
@CaptainFantastic: The $4 million security extravaganza will be financed by the California taxpayer. Mayor Villaraigosa is already out with a tin cup begging for money from fans.
@naugahydeinplainsight: I don't see how this is a public obligation. The Jackson family is hosting this memorial - they paid for the stadium, invited the performers (or said Yes to the ones who asked to perform), etc. Why it is the state's obligation and not the Jacksons to kick in to make sure everyone is safe and there are no security problems is beyond me, esp. since the state has had to cut summer school programs, etc.
Really, I cannot wait until this is all over. It's not about MJ (who wanted privacy), it's about "the brand". I keep seeing that video for "Leave Me Alone" in my head.
@FormerEnglishMajor: @CaptainFantastic: No argumnent here. Though I would be curious to know how LA handles the Oscars, Lakers parades and other big events.
Coz while this is a public event, Staples Center apparently holds 20,000 but only 11,000 of those were made available through lottery. Rest were saved for family, "friends," etc etc.
@naugahydeinplainsight: Lakers' parade paid for by the Lakers and the team owners; Oscars - I don't know who pays, but it is a one-location deal, a far cry from a moving victory parade and moving funeral procession.
And now Colony Capital says they want to turn Neverland into a Graceland - I am sure the citizens of Santa Barbara are thrilled about that.
@FormerEnglishMajor: Sounds like precedent to me. And speaking of funeral processions, the wires report: "California Highway Patrol escort shut down sections of freeways during the height of Los Angeles' morning rush hour to allow the motorcade to pass."
Conspicuously absent from the scene will be Liz Taylor, a class act, who writes online: "I just don't believe that Michael would want me to share my grief with millions of others. How I feel is between us. Not a public event."
@naugahydeinplainsight: Didn't she fund the private jet that whisked him away to switzerland in the middle of the night so he could be bleached. Forever removing the "obvious" birthmark his accuser was so familiar with?
There's a wedding photography studio near me and today they replaced all the portraits of brides in the window with photographs of Michael Jackson. Classy!
...and even after the service, just when you think things will finally go back to normal, there will be lawsuit after lawsuit - for the money, the children's custody, etc. etc. It is a full-time employment act for entertainment journos everywhere. A real-life Neverending Story.
Thanks New York Times for buying the Globe, reducing its quality, and then selling off the corpse. Although if the Times hadn't bought it in the first place, this all probably would have happened sooner.
