    From my time in the Coast Guard I can say that CG Units perform training exercises like this every day. The blame here lies with CNN.

    @onebadclam: Wait, are you saying that a branch of the armed forces practices to make sure they are prepared to do their jobs at any moment? Maybe CNN should look into doing that too.

    Arlington Alert tells me:

    Activity on the Potomac involving the U.S. Coast Guard is confirmed to be a training exercise. OEM/LROT

    A good question, though, is why this email was sent after the fact. Especially since that lameass movie stunt in the Potomac over the summer (the "explosion") was all over the local news, the alert lists, etc, days in advance.

    So, the lesson is: movie people have their shit together more than the Coast Guard.

    P.S. Alert DC didn't have a message about this at all. Ahhh, to feel safe in our nation's capitol on such a ominous date.

    My goodness. In the movies the Coast Guard does some cool breath holds and goes after poachers...why exactly are they firing rounds again today? Was it some sort of misguided 9/11 salute? Kind of like scratching your ass with a rifle muzzle, but you know, whatevs.

    @Botswana Meat Commission FC: Only if you're in a drug cartel or have a penchant for white suits, pink undershirts, and sock-less shoe adornment. However, I think this highly dramatizes dudes on a boat itching to have their own 9/11 showdown, when all the alligator poachers have moved on to gorilla hands (Gorillas in the Mist. Just sad.) or whatever devious things the poachers are into today.
