I was actually in one of the societies at Yale, though not S&B or one of the other really old ones. There's a culture that goes along with it. The point is to form bonds with a small, diverse group of people who will become your trusted confidantes for life. This is mostly facilitated by drunken "meetings" where you take turns giving your bios, reciting silly pledges and going away on booze and pot-fueled retreats. Most people, like myself, join to have a good time. I didn't know many people who took it very seriously (with a few exceptions, of course).
Skull and Bones as you can see is no longer all-white or all-male. It's well known that there was a huge falling out when the society went co-ed in '92. Many of the old alums fought tooth and nail against it and as a result stopped funding and supporting the club. That's why the properties look so run down. Supposedly, in order to promote diverse and intellectual debates and experiences, the society also moved away from tapping nothing but conservative dicks and legacies and began tapping women and minorities in high profile positions -- the leaders of the black caucus, the head of the chicano group, head of the liberal society, etc.. Once these groups got their "seats" at the table, they started their own legacy traditions where every year they tapped their successor at their campus group to take their spot and keep the chain going. Plus some of the more conservative seats were pushed out. There used to be a seat for the Editor in Chief of the Yale Daily News, for example, but the paper lost its "seat" a few years back when an EIC was tapped one year and refused to join. Same thing happened with a couple other seats that traditionally went to white conservatives.
Anyway, that's why you see so many diverse faces in those photos. If you go to the album on facebook and click on some of the other names of kids in the society, you'll see most of them are fans of Obama and other democrat/liberal icons. Skull and Bones gets a bad rep because of its terrible history and secrecy, but ironically, it's probably one of the most diverse groups on Yale's campus today. Ultimately, however, it's just a bullshit waste of time. I gained a few friends from my time in society, but I'm under no illusion that it was anything more than an excuse to drink and party. Interestingly, we did have some "connections" among former members who went on to careers in finance. But guess where they all worked?
Bear Stearns. In the end it didn't work out too well for the kids who milked those connections.

how come this looks like a pre-orientation trip for biology majors instead of a gathering of atristocrat WASPs? i guess David Brooks was right about about the beautiful, dumb, and well-born being replaced by the smart and motivated. but! more likely: nobody gives a shit about skull n' bones any more. the aristocrats work their connections behind the scenes, and the immigrants and middle class blowhards study hard and join passe social clubs that have been abandoned long-ago by the swells that made them famous.

@Mr. Secrets: The John McCain (?) photo was planted there with the booze (mouthwash?) to make it look like a funny staged photo they were going to embarrass him with later. The plastic wrap is disconcerting. If it wasn't covering the sofa, perhaps they brought it with them to wrap the bodies in?

We really need higher resolution or better equipment if we're expected to properly analyze these photos.
