The only people who like cruises are people who like food and chotskis.

Just back from Orlando. Somali Pirates of the Carribean was the best ride at Disney. It had everything; M16s and RPGs, Johnny Depp, dismembered soccer moms.

    Awesome!

I worked on a cruse ship for a couple months, and a coworker of mine went missing for a day. Some of us were convinced that she jumped ship after fighting with her boyfriend. Very scary. Fortunately, she turned up later in the day, and was locked up in the brig until the next port, where she was fired and sent home.

    Yarrrrgh!

Ye lubbers not be needin' t' be fearin' we pirates. Wi' the Great Depression pullin inna port an' th' economy heavin' to, it not be worth our while to be goin' after ev'ry random cruise ship lookin' fer booty.

We be learnin' new ways o' high finance t' be fleecin' th' fancy 'ristocrats outta thar ducats an' doubloons. The Madoff Gambit be worth more than ten ship o' th' line and does not be carryin' th' same risk o' shrapnel an stabbin' an' such.

We be savin' are excursions only t' be sinkin' ninja ships now.

I think that ninja scum be on the ropes, me hearties!

The best travelogue for a cruise I ever read was reported by Gertrude Stein, who quoted: "The water doesn't go anywhere; it just goes up and down, like revolution."

And then there is the very famous Hitchcock Presents episode in which David Niven is sort of behind on his gambling debts and hits on a wonderful scheme to back his heavy bet on the ship's pool about mileage covered per day. Teevee was great during the golden era.

This is one thing I can cross off my worry list, since I would rather be torn apart by javelinas than ever set foot on a cruise ship.

Agreed! The main danger I would face is that I would lose my fucking mind, never to be regained.

I actually have a friend who just went on a cruise, (we are very, very different) loved it, and every photo and tale she presented me from her trip confirmed that it is my (and probably your) worst nightmare.

@GirlyWhirl: Indeed, if worst nightmare is defined as floating around with a ship of fools, all of them strangers, and watching them cavort in bad clothes and consume vast quantities of terrible food from the buffet tables before going ashore in various ports of call to buy ugly and useless souvenirs. I may not sleep tonight just thinking about the horrors. I'd take my chances with the Somali pirates -- or the javelinas -- any day of the world.

I was told of hundreds of people so excited for cruise ship food in the dining hall that they would gather en masse and then bum rush when the doors opened like cattle.

Men in speedos participating in a "Sexiest Legs" contest.

The most enthralling challenge of the day being finding an empty lounge chair. And then spending the whole day there drinking and looking at legions of people strolling around in swimwear and pastel-y vacation gear.

There is so much more... but I think I've told you enough for now. The human mind is fragile and I don't want to push you over the edge.

I met someone that worked for Carnival Cruises and she told me they had an itemized list of injuries and how much they were liable for.

Some of them were scary like 'severed hand'. Who would have thought that considering that we used to travel by boat regularly?
