For real: Donald Trump Jr. recently agreed to be a "celebrity spokesperson" for my shitty company. I would reveal the name of the company, but that would cost me my unemployment if they fired me. All I'll say is that if you were to search for it, you'd see the word "scam" quite a bit. It's embarassing, but I can't afford to quit.
People who impugn Trump's business credentials are ridiculous. To put it simply, if a man owns 100 companies, 90 of which are doing well and 10 of which fail, he is doing pretty damn well for himself. Yet every time one of Trump's business ventures goes under, people like Rosie O'Donnell think it means that he is personally bankrupt. Um, no.
@Hamilton Nolan: OK, sentence one of my post may have been hyperbole. But what about sentences two and three? Do you disagree that, overall, Trump continues to do very well for himself? Your post made it sound like the casinos are the be-all and end-all of his business holdings.
@Fuzzy Dunlop: the successes that Trump has had (chiefly the Apprentice and getting paid to put his name on buildings he didn't own or build) have always been from his celebrity, not his business success. Basically, his business plan from the start was:
1. Do the sort of thing business guys do: buy and sell things.
2. Promote myself as someone with amazing super business talents.
3. ???
4. Profit!!
It turns out (3) is "People are gullible and will believe (2), which means I can sell my name."
@large orange: It's true that he didn't build/develop many of the properties with his name on them, but that's not the case for all of them. In any event, according to Wikipedia (which can never be wrong), Forbes valued his personal wealth at $3 billion. So there's something to his business plan, whatever it is. I don't think its fair to simply tar the guy as a high-class Spencer Pratt.
@Fuzzy Dunlop: Everyone would agree that Daddy Trump is successful if "successful" means "making a lot of money." (Which it does!)
I think the reason he chaps so many people's asses is that his success is based on his self-marketing as a business genius. Which he is not, except in the very limited field of self-marketing.
People who like Trump say "hey, if that's what it takes to play the game and win." People who dislike him say "he's still a wildly deceptive guy who exaggerates his own accomplishments in order to take money from people who want to be rich like he is."
@Fuzzy Dunlop: "Do you disagree that, overall, Trump continues to do very well for himself?"
No, I don't disagree with that. And it goes right to the heart of my problem with him. He does well, but everyone else gets screwed, especially his investors.
Correct as always, Bookish. The standard M.O. is that he packages a deal and adds his name. But this doesn't mean that he owns controlling interest. He ACTS like the does and many journalists accept this as fact because -- well, because he has a TV show.
How much does he make from Apprentice? Maybe this is becoming the tide that floats his boat, like "ship builder" George Steinbrenner's acquisition of a ball club.
Bla, bla, bla... you're missing the meat here: 10's of thousands of photos of the glamorous young Ivanka, but no one of her buttocks. Society demands a glimpse of Ivanka's buttocks.
@crotchety: That sounds better, but I think that how she wrote it is sufficiently correct. Also, had the exact same thought about "late Jared." How tragic! Oh, wait...#ivankatrump
"it's that she and her husband seem to be totally enveloping the New York Observer in the Trump Brand".
Hmmmm. Ivanka was brought up by TRUMP (tm), in the TRUMP TOWER (tm), stars in "The Apprentice" (tm), is a VP at the TRUMP ORGANIZATION (tm) - so her making the Observer part of the TRUMP (tm) brand is a surprise... how? #ivankatrump
Biden was the most inscrutable choice, ever, for VP. Instead of "change" Obama brought out an old hack, who had trouble with both truth telling, even during the campaign, and with inserting his foot into his mouth. Oh, to know what kind of negotiation that was, to get him on the ticket---except, perhaps to allay terrified old white guys who feared a woman and a (half)black man on the ticket would bring on the apocalypse. #joebiden
