Came to NYC last spring and saw POTO, plan on coming again next year when Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Love Never Dies" (Phantom 2!!!!!1!) hops the pond from London. I will gladly put money into your economy to satisfy my phangirl crush.
    Yes, I am that geeky.

Next To Normal is great. But no tourist here with family wants to sit through a depressing show. See Richard's post about depressing Hollywood movies for the reasoning.

A possibly stupid question. I have seen the Shrek movies and they had no original music, or didn't notice any. Is the musical the same?

It's Ragtime, one word. And everyone should go see it. It closed way before its time in its first run in the 90s because Garth Drabinsky was too busy getting arrested to keep it afloat. Also, everyone go see Finian's Rainbow (a friend of mine is in it).

But the "sad" news here is non-news; not every new musical is destined to become a juggernaut. The post-holiday and winter months are always the worst for any show; if you can survive to spring, you know you've made it.

@unclevanya: I also know someone in "Finian's Rainbow"! My friend loves the FR company; he says it's one of the nicest groups of people he's ever worked with. I've seen the show twice now, and I'm planning to go again. Not only are the cast, staging and music great; the message is gloriously subversive. You must all buy tickets now. Now, I say!

And I can't begrudge "The Lion King" their success. It's a terrific show, with a truly original approach to the material that makes you almost forget the movie.

    Then, there's "Bye Bye Birdie".........oy.

@SarikaJalope: Usually Broadway does itself a favor by having certain shows lip synch a song during the Macy's parade. This year, we got John Stamos in a high school-quality number from Byrdie, and the cast of Shrek (which is closing) doing a number from the movie that's not even in the show. Smart?

Biden was the most inscrutable choice, ever, for VP. Instead of "change" Obama brought out an old hack, who had trouble with both truth telling, even during the campaign, and with inserting his foot into his mouth. Oh, to know what kind of negotiation that was, to get him on the ticket---except, perhaps to allay terrified old white guys who feared a woman and a (half)black man on the ticket would bring on the apocalypse. #joebiden

Joe Biden is everything thats wrong and fucked up with congress. This dope won his seat in the Senate when he was 29 and has never had another job until being VP. He has learned about as much about how the country works from his perch in DC as Palin learned about Russia from staring at it. He is walking proof we need term limits.

And he doesn't drink. I don't trust people who don't drink, unless they've already been alcoholics. #joebiden

Why is it that I feel compelled to defend Gawker's subject matter against the editors/writers at least once a day lately?

Either this new crop of staff writers is utterly fucked, or the editorial direction has taken a nosedive, or both.

Is there some negative correlation between the quality of stories and the quality of AJAX/CSS? #joebiden

Not sure what point you're trying to make, Amrita... that you think Cheney's worldview makes some sense? That Cheney was initially popular, before everything he did brought his popularity rating to a low of 28%? I love it that Biden is willing to call a moron a moron. This is a ridiculous post. #joebiden

I'm absolutely NOT a supporter of ANYTHING Dick says... but, Good Lawwd, Biden, Bin Laden will always BE a part of the issue. I'm sorry, I guess if you had the prez saying this I could understand... but, uh, Joe? Nope.

That being said, why are we posting crap from Fox News anyway - I thought we weren't supposed to take this stuff seriously?

The "hero" of the Jayson Blair saga was a woman who Landman foisted Blair off on to try to get him to get his shit together. She is the one who told Landman that Blair shouldn't work for the Times. Landman took the glory and the woman was demoted to copy editor, where she remains today.
