I think this will work fine as a way to cathartically work through our anger issues over the abuse of children and our own faulty criminal justice system as long as we don't know too many actual facts about the case.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Bridgette Crafton read a statement by a girl who was raped by her father as a 10- and 11- year-old and whose videos Malakoff downloaded on his NPR laptop computer. The girl, who is now 19, described the horrors of her childhood. She said the pain she suffers will be with her forever.
"Each person who has found enjoyment in these sick images needs to be brought to justice," she wrote. "They are dangerous and even though I don't know them, they are hurting me still. They have exploited me in the most horrible way. Please bring them to some real justice."
In August of 1969, there was a teetering on the edge. The mindless hordes did not know whether it was cool to slaughter as "pigs" the wealthy class. It was quiet for a time. Bernardine Dohrn was a spokesfolks for Youth, as she talked good and she was pretty, and she said, "Lookit, they offed those pigs ..." She later walked it back and spent the rest of her life palling around with a renowned terrorist.
Ed Sanders of the Fugs wrote a book about it. His primary interest was in counteracting the lemmings who reacted to anything outrageous performed by a little creep in a beard. Good on Ed Sanders. Bad on Bernardine Dohrn.
@PandoraSpocks: Only this. The habit, even before snark was invented (by Kipling, as it happened) was to make light of a heavy topic. It's a form of youthful rebellion which I and others endeavor to acquaint you with.
That's why I keep my child porn on my own personal computer.
(I am kidding. All my pornography is legal; it's shaved 18 year olds *pretending* to be minors and pretending to enjoy sex with gross old men, OK? So back off!)
@Back to Bristol Cities: Absolutely! I want the real estate market face down on the mattress with its ass in the air talking about how naughty it has been.
"[S]hocking primarily for their stupidity." Really?
How about shocking primarily because children were being raped?
The fact that Malakoff was stupid enough to get caught (unbelievably stupid, without question) is the least shocking thing about this story, if you ask me.
@onenotesam: Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon occurrence in the world. Child porn is rampant, as are people who sell their children into it. Saying that the mere existence of child porn is shocking is like saying how shocking it is that those Slumdog Millionaire children live in such poverty. You didn't know already that this was going on? Really? What is more unusual is that an NPR correspondant would be so incredibly stupid as to download files pertaining to his sick fetish onto his work computer, and then ask the IT guy to come investigate for viruses. Shocking may have been the wrong word, but the overall sentiment is sadly correct.
@onenotesam: Child pornography in an of itself is disgusting, so I think the shock is warranted that someone doing a gross illegal act would be stupid enough to practically hand over the evidence against him.
It's not like he deleted it, it was labeled in a fucking folder for Limewire and he turned over his laptop to get it checked for a virus. File sharing networks are the first things they check.
@Adah: Sorry. It doesn't sit well with me that the most shocking aspect of this story was that he was stupid enough to download this onto his work account and got caught.
I'd like to think that we aren't so jaded and cynical that stupidity is more shocking than child abuse.
@IMadison: Sure. I mean...he was stupid, and perhaps shockingly so. But I just find it difficult to believe that you can read the excerpts that describe what was on his computer and still come away with the idea that the "primary" reason this is shocking is because the guy is stupid.
@onenotesam: Here's a take from local history, back in the news. There was a disgusting loon named White who slaughtered the mayor and a city councilman in San Francisco. He was a former police detective, and the first comment from the investigating officer, a former partner, was "How could you be so stupid?"
I agree with you, snidely focusing on the guy's stupidity -- and boy was he stupid -- is partly a distancing tactic.
But it's Gawker. And journalists are supposed to be halfway intelligent. At least we can get some sick satisfaction out of this idiot's getting caught and get through our day. Beyond that, there's nothing I can do.
I also agree with the others: The sexual abuse of children by adults unfortunately is not uncommon.
@onenotesam: I had the same exact reaction to this sentence; thanks for pointing it out. While we're keeping track, what also qualifies as "shocking" to me is that this asshole apparently didn't understand that what he was doing was so disgusting that it merited discretion. This makes me think that the world hasn't gotten the memo that sexually objectifying and victimizing children is wrong.
@Balsa Wood: Onenotesam was simply pointing out that the post above features a sentence--"The details are shocking primarily for their stupidity"--that seems to (and I'm sure Hamilton didn't meant it this way) suggest a blase attitude about the viewing of kiddie porn. Nothing silly about pointing that out.
@malke2010: I think a lot of that shit is produced in Russia and former Soviet countries.. but if the justice dept was savvy enough they could certainly trace the source of the senders..
@prince_matchabelli: There was a cop movie in which one investigator said to the other, you know how we're able to keep crime as low as it is? The galloping dumbs.
He meant the criminals. It's the same for bad crazies as for morons; it don't matter if the circuit is shorted or if there are no wires there in the first place; same results.
I'm looking at the picture with the guy's name next to it. If I was Light Yagami from Death Note, this fucko would be having a heart attack 40 seconds after this post. (Of course I wouldn't be making the post...) And then I'd go get an apple.
I may be a dork, but at least I'm a righteous one.
