Despite amazing subject matter, these photos just suck from a technical perspective. Truly inexcusably poor composition, exposure and post-processing. He was clearly using a Canon or Nikon, as the images have that synthetic, smoothed over "quality" that all the "prosumers" love.

Also, way to fail, Flickr. Yay, Web 2.0!

@Motoko Kusanagi: Whereas I like that they feel more real, more intimate because there weren't lights set up and a flash going off. These are actually relatively candid and there's no way that could've happened with a professional crew. I hear what you're saying, I do. But I think we'll have plenty of glossies to come over the next few years. These, I savor, because they're not just photos of a politician and his crew. They're photos of a family experiencing something really important together.

@rubyruby: One doesn't need lights set up to take good pictures. Simply a better photographer with a much higher-spec camera. These barely even look like they were taken with an SLR! A better photographer could've gotten just as candid shots as these, but better quality.

@chancentrate: They were taken with a 5D. There are not too many (photojournalism) DSLRs better. The account is a photo dump. No color correction, no level adjustments, no contrast adjustments, no cropping. David uploaded anywhere from 150-500 photos a day. He probably didn't even bother with the RAW photos and just automatically uploaded the .JPG.

@JLynRedux: We did a huge favor for them in the sense that they're finally going to realize having those "others" in power isn't so bad. Everything's going to be fine over the next 4 years, and they're eventually going to have to admit it and move on. They are actually one of the biggest groups benefiting from his election (unknowingly, of course).

@user5000: I know exactly what you mean. On Wednesday I felt so light and relieved. And I realized it was the boiling-frog syndrome - for 8 years I have been so angry at...the electorate for placidly allowing a Bush win twice in a row, the administration itself, etc. - and to feel that lifted...I hadn't realized how heavy a burden all that anger was, because it crept on so gradually over 8 years. And to have it replaced by a belief that people can be good, that we can all believe in good things because they are as real and possible as the crap - it's an almost chemical change inside the brain.

I'm really stunned by my own lack of cynicism about all this. Didn't think I had it in me anymore to totally buy into a dream. But, there you go. It is so perfect on so many levels. Very good point by Ryan Tate - it really is cool to see that they could stay consistent to the fans by releasing these via flickr. As a photog, I'm glad David didn't use a flash during the intimate moments.

If the set order is correct, I'm kind of shocked I don't see tears in his eyes immediately after the TV shows he is the winner. I have to assume he accepted this is his mind some time ago - but even us people who follow the news were really taken aback by the moment of formality it was announced.
