I'm sorry, but didn't we hear about the extensive 50-page employment and vetting application that each one of Obama's potential cabinet members had to fill out? How did this get past that?

Anyway, Richardson doesn't matter. I want to know why Obama is keeping Bush and Rice's foreign policy advisors.

Yeah, all that standing toe to toe with Bashir in Sudan and with the North Koreans, and Saddam Hussein, and Milosevic, as well as traveling all over the world and being nominated for the Novel Peace price three times, what kind of cred is that if the guy isn't slick talking and nice looking? And people wonder why we have people like Blagojevich in office. I mean, the guy's not wearing Armani, who cares if he gave land back to Native Americans and got them a representative in government, or handled the US/UN Israel/Palestine negotiations in the 90's, or was the first energy secretary to bring up a plan for disposal of nuclear waste, or supported LBGT rights and added sexual orientation and gender identity to civil rights legislation, and legalized marijuana for medical reasons? What we needed in this administration was another guy who gave speeches about hope and change, instead of actually legislating change-making policies.

Idiots. Richardson was possibly the best thing about the new administration.

@somedayarealrainwillcome: It's a scandal that would hurt the Democratic administration by adding to the meme of the "Democratic Culture of Corruption" that the Republicans are building up. The Commerce Secretary is a relatively unimportant cabinet position. Richardson isn't so valuable that the Obama administration should start defending him over possible corruption.

Furthermore, I actually believe in, you know, the law. If Richardson is guilty, he's guilty and he'll get what's coming to him. If he comes out of this clean, there may be a future role for him in the new administration, who knows. I'm not going to dismiss (possible) wrongdoing just because "they all do it." There is a line that most politicians are smart enough not to cross. Time will tell if Richardson crossed that line.

I supported him for president, by the way. Though I never got to vote for him... by the time the contest got to my state, it was down to Clinton and Obama.

@GuyBitchy: That's a pretty silly notion, IMO. Why the hell would Obama listen to Clinton about who needed to go? If Hillary absolutely couldn't stand to have Richardson in a fairly minor cabinet post, which seems incredible to me, then she could have expressed her objections before he took the position.

Clinton is not under investigation for anything. That's the difference between her and Richardson.
