Q: Working for Fox, have you ever witnessed any book burnings, KKK rallies or Glenn Beck kiddie porn parties?

A: No, that atmosphere exists at the news division only. At the entertainment division it’s a very liberal atmosphere. It might as well be two separate companies.

(Actual Presumptuous Question: Do you feel out of place at Fox because of the politically conservative atmosphere? Is that a bond between you and Groening?)

Q: Based on these questions, would you imagine I've ever seen a single episode of "Family Guy?"

A: I would highly doubt it.

(Actual Question: "Family Guy" has been nominated for an Emmy for best comedy series. Do you expect to win an award next Sunday?)

Q: Why won't you go to the MoMA with me?

A: No, I never had any desire to do that. I cannot tell good art from bad art. I have no eye for it.

(Actual Presumptuous Question: You attended the Rhode Island School of Design and presumably had some interest in becoming a fine artist?)

That's it right there: "presumably" is SUCH a Solomon word. So passive-aggressive. So knowing.

    dear nytimes,
just because you hire staff who are hostile towards arts & culture, doesn't mean you'll make converts of the wsj readership. please stop trying.

You can feel the tension through the lines on the page...palpable. Seth did a very long interview on Howard Stern, and I have listened to his DVD commentary, and generally I think he is a thoughtful, intelligent person with a dark sense of humor. Ms. Solomon's hostility is almost immediately apparent and I think Seth handles it appropriately. Full disclosure: I love Seth and his cartoons (yea, don't really care what anyone thinks.)

@Heywoodjablome: Family Guy is funny. Inappropriate and shocking too. Don't watch it with your moms.

This interview is more about McFarlane's no-frills brevity than her loquacity. He wins. He doesn't want to waste his time with any flowery analysis nor does he feel the need to defend his show and sensibilities. He's like, here I am, take it or leave it, Lady Who Doesn't Understand It.

Gawker commenters!?! I am so disappointed. This interview, especially with the license under "Interview has been condensed and edited," should be condensed and edited.

    Here's mine:

Q: Do you like to create the show while inebriated?

A: We try. If we’re not hitting that, then we probably have to turn up the dial a little bit, because I hope we are keeping ourselves saturated.

(Actual question: I would say Groening is a better colorist. You don’t seem that interested in expressive color.)

Ironic that the interview was published on September 11. Seth Macfarlane famously had a ticket on Flight 11 out of Boston, but missed it when his agent gave him the wrong time. Someone without Seth's dark comic sensibilities might have been more flipped out by such an experience. Maybe Solomon should have asked him about that instead of wasting time with these crusty ass questions rooted in feminist politics circa 1989.

Why would you even put "Interview has been condensed and edited," for the online version? I want to read the entire thing & online has no page limits!

"The Daily Show" occasionally has to edit down an interview to fit the time slot, as with Jim Cramer, but then puts the entire interview up on their website.

I agree that this is an uncomfortable interview, but I did love this:

"Visually, do you think "Family Guy" is lesser than Matt Groening’s "Simpsons"?
Stylistically, I think we’re on par with each other.

I would say Groening is a better colorist. You don’t seem that interested in expressive color."

I thought she came across as a humorless schoolmarm - as though she was trying to educate MacFarlane on the error of his take on comedy.

Granted, his oafish 'jokes' aren't generally funny, but to harp on them like old people complaining about that rock and/or roll music makes her seem irrelevant and ill-suited as an interviewer.

Also, isn't it incredible that she actually asked Seth McFarlane what his target audience is for Family Guy? Is there a way to be even less-prepared for an interview? I mean, she could have called him Herbert McFarlane, or something, but still.
